NEW YORK, January 30.—With rela- tively high costs for building materials, with wages still above the July, 1929, level; with freight rates up, with little money available for building loans and with a lack of demand evidenced by ubiquitous vacancies, the outlook for the building industry is dismal, according to the current Business Conditions Weekly of the Alexander Hamilton Institute. Prices of building materials have dropped only 24.2 per cent since July, 1929, whereas the general commodity price dropped 32.3 per cent, structural steel about only 19 per cent. Material costs to bullders, however, have not dropped as low as prices quoted by lucers, because rallroads, instead of making & corresponding reduction in freight rates, have actually raised rates. In the case of lumber, for instance, it is estimated that the cost of transporta- tion often represents 150 per cent of the price of lumber at the mill. ‘Wages of labor, cuts here and there, are still practically at the peak and are still above the July, 1929, level.
