DS gy Fs Illustriation for Vanity Fair story about British hunter in Africa. IN VENEZUELA “LOST WORLD” WASHINGTON, D. C, (PAP).—The world’s highest waterfall, hidden away in a remote region of Venezuela’s Guiana Highlands, is named for the adventurous North American gold prospector Jimmy Angel, who discovered it in 1935 while piloting his. plane through a deep gorge of the misterious Gran Sabana (Great Plain), seeting for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Lost World” and-W. H. Hudson’s “Green Mansions.” Angel Falls is twice as high as the Empire State Building and fifteen times higher than Niagara. Other wonders of this once “Lost World,”. most of them less spectucular but far more vital to the Venezuelan economy today, are its mineral wealth in gold, diamonds, and iron; and also the Imataca magnetic iron field, where a compass goes “crazy.” Unexplored and unexploited for centuries, the Guiana High- lands, occupying roughly half the national territory in southeastern Venezuela, yielded their trasures slowly. It took ten years and 65 million dollars for the Bethlehem Corporation to develop the iron deposit at El Pao, discovered south of the Orinoco River just before Pearl Harbor. Before the first ore shipments were made in 1951 to Sparrows Poiht, Maryland, the company had to build a 34mile raiway through thick jungle to Palia on the Orinoco, and a new port, Puerto Hierro on the Paria Peninsula, where the ore is trans- | ferred from river barges to ocean-going ships, After six years of exploration, aerial and magnetic surveys aided geologists of the United States Steel Corporation in discovering the fabulous “iron mountain” renamed Cerro Bolivar, west of the Caroni River, in 1947, The mountain, thickly encrusted with ore, is one of the richest deposits in the world, having a proven reserve of half a billion tons of high grade, open pit iron. Fifteen years aog I met him at his old mansion in the outskirts of México City. He modestly refraine ed from showing me his own work, Instead, I had the opportunity to admire in detail his collection of pre-Hispanic pieces — particularly the large stone figures, found on the central plateau — which he had scattered about the garden; a wide variety of Mexican popular paintings; and early works of Rue fino Tamayo. Robust and smiling, Covarrubias conversed with aiglity about his experiences around the world and took special delight in displaying the workds of others, His wide knowledge of folklore ledhim to the post of chief of the dance department of the National Institute of Fine Arts. in México City some years ago, and he began to give less and Iss time to carica ture and ‘illustration. He arranged exchanges of important works of distant cultures between museums in México and in other coun- tries. He devoted himself to scien- tifie and methodical study. With all its modernity, the East- ern Professional Center (Centro Profesional del Este) is no novelty in a city as daring in architectural development as Caracas. More of a novelty is its organization. Built to attract specialists in the build- ing trade, it offers them office space and services not found else- where. And so appealing was the promoters’ idea, that every space was sold even before the first of- fice was ready for occupancy. Upon purchasing stock on the project, the investor becomes part owner of the building and all its facilities, in proportion to the number of shares bought and on this ratio is he also entitled to of- fice space. There is even a bank which exclusively deals with the construction’ business and is fit- tingly called Banco de la Cons- truccién (Construction Bank), Tenants have a chance to meet each other in receptions, exhibi- tions or concerts for all of which the building has special halls, and less formally, in the restaurant, bar, club, gymnasium or swimming pool. To facilitate their work, there are open and undergorund park- ing areas for 209 cars, gas and service station, a ware house, barber shop, mimeograph service, and a store for the sale of engineering and architectural instruments. Space has been reserved for the editorial staff of a oat magazine on the building trade, The 14story building has two subbasements and stands on a rec tangular plot 71,000 square feet, located in the Sabana Grande sec- tion of Caracas. Floor space is 107,- 110 square feet, and a little more than 70,000 square feet are devot- - ed to recreation facilities and ser- vices. Offices overlook either Avi- la mountain to the north or the southern hills, and have an abund- ance of daylight, as both the front and the rear sides of the building are covered with glass windowg and a minimum of solid walls, Pests MENT a teas Deadlikc tated atin Paar os SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSMMFSE SUNDAY, MAY 5, 1957 PAG, 11 ' oat 6
