‘A8 122 PASSENGERS SAVED FROM-SHIP Crew of Dutch Steamer Orania Also Rescued After Collision. , By the Associated Press. OPORTO, Portugal, Decémber 20.— Bwift-working seamen yesterday re- moved 122 passengers from the Dutch steamer Orania just before she sank in Leixoes Harbor after colliding with the Portuguese freighter Loanda. A great hole was torn in the Orania and she immediately listed heavily to port, the passengers being disembarked. Efforts then were made to beach the Orania, but she sank in the harbor, lying on. her side half submerged. The freighter was entering the har- bor at full speed when she crashed into the anchored Orania, which had 122 passengers aboard. The Dutch ship's side was torn open from top to bottom and pas- sengers were hurled helter skelter by the impact. Comdr. Laurens Maars of the Or- enia quickly organized the disembark- ing of the passengers, using the life- boats on the port side. Martin's study indicated income tax rates have been increased in three ways: The maximum rates have been raised, exemptions have been lowered 80 that the tax now frequently ap- plies to incomes of lower middle cldss citizens and in many States the gradu- ation has been made steeper. While in some cases corporation taxes have been increased by the same methods, more frequently cor- porate income has been subjected to a flat rate which has gradually been] raised in States already having this tax. This rate on the whole has| been higher in the new corporation tax statutes than in those enacted some years ago.
