Despite an office memorandum to | personnel of the office of the con- | troller, Agricultural Adjustment Ad- ministration, announcing “that it will be necessary i furlough some of the employes from time to time” it was | said today by John B. Payne, the | controller, who signed the memoran- dum, that no furloughs are antici- pated within 90 days and that no| estimates can be made at this time as to the number likely to be affected. The memorandum, dated December { 19, reads: “Due to the fluctuations in the volume of work, it will be necessary to furlough some of the employes from time to time. In determining | who will be furloughed, the factors considered will be general efficiency, and the amount of time absent from work on account of sick leave and | leave without pay.” The number of furloughs and the | date when they will be made depends, Mr. Payne said, “upon the number of contracts from the field.” ‘The furlough problem, he said, | would be worked out after the first of the year. Before that time, he said, there will be no definite information available.
