B—12 BYRD SUPPLY SHP PLANS FOR GALE Crew Sets Up Rigging as S. S. Bear Moves South. By the Assoclated Press. 8. 5. BEAR OF OAKLAND, en route to Little America, December 19 (via Mackay Radio).—This supply ship of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition has taken on full bunkers of coal and her crew is now setting up rigging in preparation for the violent Antarctic gales which she must buck before reaching her destination. An additional deck winch has been installed for use in scientific work. Silk nets are lowered at varying depths to collect plankton and other micro- scopic organisms. Instruments are also lowered on wire to record tem- peratures and collect water samples. | Samples also aid oceanographers to determine submarine currents, chemi- cal elements which will'aid the study of migration of whales. . On arriving at the Bay of Whales the bottom will be dredged to obtain blological and geological specimens which will throw light on the puzzling phenomena of this permanent bay in a moving structure which elsewhere varies its position. With tons of supplies for Little America, the Bear plans to sail from Dunedin, New Zealand, on Decem- ber 27. HOPEFUL FOR BUSINESS DETROIT, December 20 (#).—De- scribing the business outlook for 1935 as “fine,” Harvey S. Firestone, the tire manufacturer, declared here yes- terday, after a visit with Henry Ford, that he thought the next Congress would steer away from experimental legislation and return to “tried meth- ods” of reviving business. “The hopeful thing about business conditions now,” he said, “is that practical business experience of the country is not held at a discount, as it was at the low point of the de- pression.” Firestone said he believed the Fed- eral administration would co-operate with business men during the coming year. ) v, J 810~8I8 7 1934 Studebaker Car Given Away Every time you make a purchase, you get an opp ortunity to participate in this free award. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 20.~The newspaper profession, Dean Carl Ack- erman of the Columbia University School of Journalism said last night, is one of the paramount factors for world peace. Declaring it should be recognized more widely as such, Ackerman suggested the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, in 1935, should “survey the press of the world and make an award to & news- paper, a press association or an editor who shall make the greatest contribu- tion in the field of journalism to in- ternational understanding.” The influence of such a prize, the dean said, in a radio address broad- cast over the N. B. C. network, “would make a public opinion a more power- ful peace force than it is today.” M ST.,N.W.
