D. C. INSURANCE AGENTS IN LEAD Gain of 28 Per Cent 0verl Year Ago Is Largest of Entire Nation. BY EDWARD C. STONE. ‘Washington insurance agents hung up the best record in the whole United States in new insurance writ- ten in November, compared with the same month last year, scoring a gain of 28 per cent. The monthly survey received from Hartford, Conn., today .showed the national average to be 3 per cent lower than a year ago. Virginia was fourth from the top with a 12 per cent gain and new insurance in Maryland was up 7 per cent. North Carolina fell a point below the national average with a 4 per cent decrease in new business. West Virginia was off 7 per cent from a year ago and South Carolina stood at the very bottom of the entire list with a slump of 20 per cent. For the first 11 months of 1934, Washington stands 13 per cent ahead of last year’s mark. Maryland is 21 per cent up, Virginia, 12 per cent; West Virginia, 26 per cent; North Carolina, 18, and South Carolina, 11 per cent under the like period a year ago. The average for the whole country is 10 per cent better than in the first 11 months of 1933. New insurance in the Capital to- taled $4,211,000, Maryland reported $7.525,000, Virginia totaled $5,875,000, ‘West Virginia wrote $3,476,000 in new policies, North Carolina’s total was $6,385,000 and South Carolina, the other State in this trade area, re- ported a total of $2,332,000. The report added that 53 per cent of the companies doing business in Wash- ington wrote more business than a year ago. Meem Commences Fourth Year. Harry G. Meem, president of the Washington Loan & Trust Co. has begun his fourth year as the institu- tion’s leader. Elected on December 14, 1931, he followed |- the late John B. Larner, who was one of the found- ers of the trust company and president of the bank for many years, Mr. Meem has been connected with the Wash- ington Loan & Trust Co. for more than four e decades. His career in banking Harry G. Meem. e stance of “from bank runner to presi- dency,” a period through which every banker obtains an unusual view of all departments of the bank. After being assistant treasurer and treasurer, he ‘was elected a vice president in 1917. A native of the District, Mr. Meem ‘was born in Georgetown, where mem- bers of the family had resided since 1756. His father, Peter G. Meem, was officially connected with the Farmers & Mechanics’ Bank in the early days of that institution. Perhaps that is the main reason why Mr. Meem as a youth always wanted to enter banking. During the Liberty Loan drives he was one of the most active financiers in the city in pushing sales and sub- scriptions. He is a director in several business organizations, is a member of the Chevy Chase Club, the Archeological Society and the National Geographic Society. Pay Tribute to Gov. Black. Members of the District Bankers’ Association sent a message of regret today to relatives of the late Eugene R. Black, governor of the Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The association will also pay tribute with flowers at the funeral. While head of the Federal Reserve System, Gov. Black made his first ad- dress after taking office, before the District Bankers’ Association, at the Columbia Country Club. Everybody liked him, everybody admired his ability. The financial district was grieved again today to hear of the sudden death of Charles E. Howe, for 42 years actively connected with the American Security & Trust Co. He died at Emergency Hospital from pneumonia, at the age of 67 years. He had been in the city only a few days, coming here to attend the trust company's 45th anniversary dinner. Mr. Howe was an outstanding figure in the financial district for three dec- ades. He edited the first financial sheet printed in the financial district, much of the material used being fur- nished by the late Albion K. Parriss. His greatest hobby was art and he was 8 remarkable judge of fine paintings. Association 54 Years Old. The Washington Permanent Build- ing Association has just completed its fifty-fourth year in business. The or- ganization now has assets of $8,350,- 000 and is located in its own building at 629 F street northwest. Since 1881 the organization has made continuous and sound progress. Present officers and directors are: E. J. Sacks, president; John Hender- son, vice president; C. J. Bergmann, treasurer; H. H. Bergmann, secretary; C. Chester Caywood, general counsel; John H. Clipper, C. Rammling, James R. Ellis, Clyde H. Miller, C. Chester Caywood, Max Walten, Joseph M. Saunders and Walter B. Avery, di- rectors. The association was the first build- ing association in Washington to he- come a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank. It is also a member of the District of Columbia Building and Loan League and the United States Building and Loan League. Today's Trading on Exchange. Lanston Monotype opened trading on the Washington Stock Exchange today, with two sales at 48!2. Later *the stock moved off half a point, 38 shares selling at 48. Potomac Electric Power 512 per cent preferred stock was the most active issue on the list. Five different sales were recorded at 111. The corpora- tion’s 6 per cent preferred was also out today, 10 shares selling at 10915, Washington Railway & Electric 4s appeared on the board with a $1,000 bond sale at 98'2. Other bids were unchanged. Washington banks are.in gala at- tire for Christmas. Some of the trees are exceptionally beautiful this year. No indications of any depression, — NEW YORK PRODUCE. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 20.—Stock prices hardened following forenoon ir- regularity today. Trading was rather quiet. A resumption of selling in utility shares was a disturbing factor in the early dealings. The late tone was fairly steady, although some of the power shares were still lower. In the last hour Consolidated Gas and American Telephone were down about & point, while quotations were steady to a little higher in U. S. Steel, N. Y. Central, Chrysler, General Motors, Sears Roebuck and U. S. Smelting. ‘Transfers approximated 900,000 shares. Shares of Radio preterred B and McCrory Stores preferred got up about while Caterpillar Trac- tor, Howe Sound, Chrysler, Du Pont and McCrory common were & trifle firmer. Consolidated Gas dropped more than a point to a new low for the past 12 years or longer. Others down fractionally to around a point included American Telephone, North American, Public Service of New Jer- sey, United Gas Improvement, Inter- national Telephone, Western Union, U. S. Smelting, Monsanto Chemical, J. C. Penney, Montgomery Ward and National Distillers. Such issues as U. S. Steel, Bethlehem, General Motors, Chrysler, Standard Oils of California and New Jersey, American Can, Santa Fe, Union Pacific and New York Central registered only slight variations The opinions of brokerage com- mentators were divided as to the actual trend of stocks. In some quar- ters the view was expressed that a backing and filling area would be wit- nessed within about a point of present levels. The thought was also ad- vanced that a full technical correction may now be in progress and that this movement could carry a point or so further without doing any particular harm. FOREIGN MARKETS.
