Heavy steel fenders are of one-plece design with beading along the center. The tie rod and cowl bars are curved to harmonize with the gen- eral lines of the car, while the radiat- or cap is of wing design. Rigidity and balance are claimed for the mono-piece body, which is so mounted on the chassis that the pas- senger load rides closely to the ground. On the panel dashboard are grouped the starting but- ton, carburetor choke, manifold heat control, spark control and theft lock | ignition switch. The one-plece finger thin steering wheel holds the light con- trol switch, gasoline throttle and horn button. Gear shift is standard. Engine design has been refined to provide greater power, economy, speed and acceleration. An “L” head type engine is used, with a seven bearing crankshaft, while a new front exhaust manifold leaves the driving compart- ment free from engine heat. Hudson retains the two-chassis idea, elaborated into a number of bodies, the first of 122 inches and the second of 139 inches. Salient mechanical fea- | tures are the same on all models. The standard chassis comes in nine body . the roadster, phaeton, standard , town sedan, landau sedan, coupe, | coach, convertible coupe and victoria. | Five body types are available on the | 139-inch chassis, a five-passenger sport | phaeton, a seven-passenger phaeton, & | five-passenger sport sedan, a seven- | passenger sedan and a limousine. and comfort in driving and rid- | of the rich body colors. Performance, style, comfort and #afety—these are the four watchwords on which the automobile industry is concentrating, and exemplified inthe car shown in the show. Ecconomy has been nractically forgotten, yet manu- facturing improvements have kept pace | with body changes and the cars of to- day are lower in price than they have been for several seasons back. Smaller wheels and larger tires enhance the appearance of the car and new head and parking lamps, set on chromium plated brackets, are featured. Ease of control of the gears is affarded by the set of the gearshift lever, inclined toward the driver. The accelerator pedal and footrest are de- signed (o permit foot movement without affecting speed of car and cowl venti- lator, foot operated, makes the driving compartment more comfortable. Buick also shows the smaller six, on a 116- inch chassis, powered with a slightly smaller motor of 74 horsepower. Both models are built in all body styles. Cadillac and La Salle again have their usual impressive exhibits, the | former showing samples of 12 body styles and in addition offering a special 140-inch wheelbase chassis. The bodies | landau cabriolet is built on the 140- | inch wheelbase, powered by a V-type, tracting band type and Is located at the rear of the transmission. Dodge has new style wheels with elliptical spokes and mushroom hub caps. Love- Jjoy hydraulic shock absorbers are standard equipment. New Deusenberg Frame. A new type of frame construction | to eliminate wheel wabble and radiat- or shimmy is featured in the new Deusenberg, known as the “A” type construction, effected by use of two| 2-inch heat treated alloy steel cast-| ings, one of which extends on each | side of the frame. The rear end of | the motor rests on two specially design- | ed anchors with double seats, securely riveted to the sides of the frame, while the frame itself is said to be the heaviest used on any passenger car. | six_cross members are used. One of the featured models is the row chromiium plate body molding. The lengthy lines are accentuated by wider than previous models. Adjust~ able front seats are incorporated in the sedan and victoria. In all tvpes the windshield glass is shaiter-proor, wnie there is a new steering gear, larger clutch and brake pedals and a new muffler, which is said to eliminate back pressure. Output of the motor is in- creased from 80 to 91 horsepower, with | increased improvement in speed and \hi]l climbing. The valve lift has been | increased and a new carburetion sys- tem introduced. | Hupp in Many Models. | The Hupp Motor Car Corporation of- | fers its greatest array of eigha and | sixes with refinements, improvements | and a distinctive group of body types. The eight includes nine separate models, all but two of which are on the 120- m:h chassis. Nuw models are included | four cylinders ' opposed _eight-cylinder engine with Fisher body. The cut- | open chassis is also on _exhibition. So with motor changes, although the in- dustry as a whole is so highly geared that no one car stands out for power or speed. All have them in overflowing abundance. Nearly all the manufacturers have | standardized on high-compression en- gines. to take gasoline capable of greater power-plant production. Bear- ing and shaft changes have been made to meet higher compressions, and the seven-bearing crankshaft in six-cylin- der models is now almost universal. Gear reductions have been sltered to meet_higher compressions an® second- gear ratios have been dropped to a point where they almost meet the high-~ gear ratio. Mechanical perfection has apparently been reached in virtually all models. Among these detafls may be listed the finger-tip control offered by Whippet, the synchro-mesh transmission of Cadillac and La Salle, the increased | number of four-speed transmissions, automatic refill for the master cylinder on four-wheel hydraulic brake sets, the decarbonizer unit on the Chrysl.er 80, the almost universal application of oil-filtering devices, air cleaners and crankcase ventilating systems. Non- shatterable glass protects the motorist in the Lincoln, Hudson, Pierce-Arrow, Cadillac, La Salle and Chrysler. Cen- ters of gravity have been lowered and better brakes are common.. Cam and lever steering has shown a gain, wheels have been reduced in size, wire wheels have gained in popularity and in many more instances the tires are carried in fender wells. Some New Feature. Nearly every make has some inter- esting new feature to recommend it, and instrument boards have become more than ever the motorists' guide t& driving comfort and safe has continued its crankcase ofl-level ge and in many makes intake manifold and carburetor control devices are shown on'the dash. -More makers are using hypoid or worm rear-axle drives, clutches have been improved and cen- tral chassis lubricating systems have increased in number. The spread of hydraulic shock absorbers has been gen- eral and wiring equipment has been improved. Auburn is showing its new six and two straight eights in a number of body stylés. The six, which is built " on a 120-inch wheelbase, is the first ! and rubber-covered foot pedals. bid by Auburn in the field below a thousand dollars. The car is built in four models, two of which are at slightly more than a thousand dollars. The straight eight, one of the most popu- lar models of last season, has been continued on a 125 and 130 inch wheel- base, with a Lycoming engine develop< ing 33.8 horsepower, N. A. A. C. rating. All three lines have four-wheel .ex- panding hydraulic brakes, Lovejoy hy- draulic shock absorbers, Bijur chassis lu- brication system oiling 21 points of the chassis, corona proof ignition wires, starter button on dash and velour or leather upholstery. Both lines have dual carburetion and dual manifolding and both are equipped with the Lan- chester harmonic crankshaft balancer. Double reinforced chassis frames fea- ture both lines. Other improvements listed are increased cooling arrange- ments, cam and lever type steering, watertight doors, non-glare windshields on closed models, steel running boards, electric clock, metal body side quarters Buick in 18 Models. Buick continues its silver anniver- sary type in 18 models and also shows for the first time the new four-passen- ger coupe. The latest Buick product, built on & chassis of 121-inch, is pow- ered by a 91-horsepower motor. The silver anniversary line has rounded contours following the popular trend, and intensifying the lights and luster o two complete | new lines of cars—Cadillacs an La Salles—with special Fleetwood bodies on both chassis. Important innovations include new duplex mechanical four- wheel brakes of the internal shoe type; the new Cadillac syncro-mesh silent shift transmission; unbreakable glass in all doors, windows and windshields; im- | proved steering, with elimination of road shocks from the steering gear and collapsible front seats. New principles | | of pneumatics are in the new models to insure maximum quietness;strength- ening of body construction and refine- ments of bodies and exteriors. In the La Salle the engine and the bodles are larger and the wheelbase, except in three open models and one Fleetwood, | 1s lengthened to 134 inches. Chandler In 26 Styles. Chandler offers 26 different body styles in the “65,” Big Six, Royal “75” and “85” series, with a wide variety of new color choices-optional. The motor of the “65” is along. the lines of the Pikes Peak motor, incorporating Chand- ler's high compression power principle. In the eight cylinder field Chandler of- fers the Royal “75,” a medium priced eight on a 118-inch chassis. The power plant has a speed range up to 75 miles an hour. One of the power achievements is a cylinder head which incorporates a high compression cham- ber, improving combustion and flame propagation. The two front seats of the brougham are individual type and are adjustable. Chandler’s most luxuri- ous line is offered in the Royal “85, made in two coupes and a touring car. The power plant is eight in line, and Westinghouse - vacuum brakes are standard. ,This brake requires only one- third the pressure of the average brake, yet increases the effective bnlun‘ power. Chevrolet brought out its new six- cylinder line several weeks ago and has | a liberalsgdisplay of them at the show, | embracing seven models, five closed cars and two open jobs. Closed cars include the coach, sedan, sport cab- riolet, coupe and convertible landau. Open models are the roadster and the phaeton, which take the place of the touring car. Adjustable driver’s seats are offered in the closed models, with new beam head lamps and four-wheel brakes. Several mechanical advance- ments are included in the new six- cylinder engine. An acceleration pump insures fast getaway, the new hot spot manifold warms up the gas and a new- design compression chamber allows un- usually high compression with ordinary fuel. Each model has its own color scheme, and all are roomier than the | four-cylinder model. The chassis is of 107-inch. wheelbase, with bodies rigidly braced, of Fisher composite con- struction, with steel and wood re- inforcements. The motor develops thirty-two more horsepower than its four-cylinder pre- decessor, and the car is said .to have a proved economy of better than 20 miles per gallon of gas. * The carburetor is new and larger and the motor has a newly designed crankshaft with a new fabric gear. The automatic accelera- tion pump operates whenever the ac- celerator is suddenly depressed and forces a small quantity of gasoline into the carburetor manifold. Chrysler Has 53 Cars. Chrysler offers 53 cars for the year, but, of course, space does not permit | showing all models at the show. In the Chrysler itself there are 53 body styles, in addition to 42 different Dodge com- mercial types and Fargo commercial vehicles in a number of styles. The De Soto, Dodge and Plymouth round out the complete Chrysler line, headed by the Imperial “80.” A complete new line of Dodge cars is on exhibit, showing the new Victory and Senior sixes. ~ Mono-piece con- struction is featured in the Dodge line, of sweeping lines accentuated by the black leather. Wide door windows. fit | tightly and are concealed in the door when not in use. Dupont Motors, of Wilmington, spe- cializes each year in the construction of a limited number of high-grade cars. This year it is featuring the new eight-cylinder models, with motors of the L-head type, developing 125 horse- power. A cast aluminum cover pm- tects the ignition unit, wiring and rl from dirt and moisture. Internal ex- panding hydraulic brakes are of Lock- design. The line comprises six body styles. Durant Motors offers 34 models for 1929 in a complete line of ecars, with wheelbase from 107 inches to 119 inches. The Durant “40” is a con- tinuation of the four known as the Star of other years. It has a Red Seal motor, Bendix four-wheel brakes and flat-grip steering wheel. Durant Engine Powerful. ‘The Durant Six “60" features a bj ger and more powerful engine on 109-inch wheelbase, Lanchester bal- ancer and Bendix four-wheel brakes. The car is available in all standard models. The Six “66” is new to the Durant line, outstanding features be- ing the Durant special silent thisd and double high transmission, which is said to effect a 20 per cent reduction in gasoline and oil consumption and a 40 per cent reduction in engine wear. The chassis is of 112-inch wheelbase, with shock absorbers all around. A new radiator is used in the new models, higher than the previous ra- diator, but retaining the distinctive grill work of Durant. The “70,” which tops the line, is also a new model, featuring the same type of transmis- sion as the “60.” An added feature is' a manual control radiator shutter. The Erskine line offered by Stude- baker .is available in seyen models, with bodies of mew design. A pew deep, narrow radiator flanked by head lamps of new design, topped by a flat radiator cap, is standard. Appear- ance of the body lines is accentuated by the new molding treatment, which flows in a curve from the windshield down to the lower corner of the hood. Interiors are refined with a recessed ash tray, dome light and antique ivory instrument panel on which are grouped all the instruments. All models are powered by the Erskine six motor, which holds several records. Essex offers the new Challenger line, with 76 different mechanical and body improvements—more speed and power, new steering gear, four-wheel brakes and other improvements. Greater speed and power are due to a larger bore, high compression, increased valve lift, new cylinder head, improved valve timing, new lubrication, larger radiator, new type fan, new muffler and high gear ratio. A new steering gear is in the car, adjustable for the drlver'x height, operating on roller bearings throughout. The new brake system is of the two-shoe type, completely cov- ered, with molded composition blocks used ‘instead of textile linings. The l&:ku can be adjusted without use of Front seats of sedans and the driver's seat in coaches are adjustable forward and back. Novelties listed include a chased silver instrument panel with a cnnkcm oil level gauge incorporated. A “fuel booster” is employed in the carburetion system to insure adequate fuel delivery and furnish extra fuel for climbing and fast driving.. Cowl venti- lators are so made that neither rain nor water splashed on the body can reach the interior of the car. Three New Ford Types. Ford has three new body types, in addition to those of the regular “A” model line—a town sedan, the cabriolet and the station wagon. Lines are low and straight, emphasized by the French roof quarters and belt molding starting at the radiator and encircling the body.
