With the Klan routed, the Birger and Shelton armies drew swords to resume their liquor war. Race riots, the vendetti and the Her- rin “massacre” had given “Bloody Wil- liamson” its name. It was a new era of lawlessness, however, that dawned on the mine country in 1924. For months the Birger band and the Shel- ton gang spattered blood in what was called the most deadly civil feud in Illinois’ history. Birger's forest citadel, Shady Rest, was almost impregnable. Barbed wire and armed guards surrounded it as Bir- ger directed his battles. Murders be- came almost every day aflairs. Every weapon of modern warfare except poison gas was used. Airplane bombs eventu- ally blew up Shady Rest, killing four persons. Never has a witness to this; attack been found. Counties in Terror. HERRIN WARFARE INVENTORY TOLD Battleground of Birger Gang Finally Tosses Aside Its Armor. By the Assoclated Press. MARION, Ill, January 17.—Southern Illinois, battleground of 27 slayings in Birger gang wars, finally has tossed aside its armor for a peace-time in- ventory. ‘The inside story of “Bloody William- son” County’s liquor strife, which raged at pistol points for more than three years, now may be disclosed. Three former followers of Charley Birger, one- time overlord of Little Egypt’s gangland, have escaped death on a murder charge for their promises to “tell it all.” They are Art Nedman, Leslie Simpson and Freddie Wooten. Five years ago the feuds began. Mli- nois’ coal belt had become ove:run with liquor traffic, jointly centrolled by Birger and the Shelton brothers. Into the bootleggers' haven came the Ku Klux | the rival gangs fought for control in the mine belt. Two mayors were num- bered ‘among the dead when “Bloody Willlamson” counted its victims. Thrice Birger was indicted for murder. For the death of Mayor Joe Adams of West City Birger was hanged last April, nearly twa years after the slaying. It| had taken the law more than four years to fasten its claws on the bandit chief. Had Birger succeeded in escaping the | noose two other murder charges would have awaited him. The three Shelton brothers, whose | power had menaced Birger's, were | forced to withdraw from the combat when they were jalled for a $15,000 | mail robbery near East St. Louis. A year ago Lory L. Price, highway patrolman, and his wite were slain be- cause they “knew too much” about the bombing of Shady Rest. Three Bir- ger gangsters pleaded guilty to killing Mrs. Price. Life sentences were im- posed when they agreed to tell hitherto unknown facts of Williamson County gangland. Kissing Again Condemned. “Kissing is a dangerous habit in more vays than one, but we are only con- ‘l‘fn\l‘d by the danger which might re- | sult through the transference of germs ‘dec!an‘s Dr. Ralph Picken. medical of. | ficer of health ‘of Cardiff, Wales. “There | is such a danger, but it is easy to ex- aggerate it, and a mandate against kiss- ing would most certainly be a dead let- ter.
