Presidentand Mrs. Coolidge Establish Notable Record AsHostsatthe White House Army and Navy Reception of Thursday Night Closes Memorable Career Marked by True American Hnspitality. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HEN the President and Mrs. Coolidge greeted their last guests at the Army-Navy reception Thursday night, they closed a social record for hospitality unequaled in the past history of the White House. There has been no blare of trumpets or effort at ostentatious elegance, no striving to leave unique features or changes behind them, but a steady flow of typical American hospitality such as is intended to be carried out in the mansion, and with fewer lapses than in any administration of recent years. O far as the outer world knows Mrs. Coolidge has introduced no special innovations, and the reception of Thursday was consistently in keeping with the first event of state held in this administration. Because the public has come to know its President and First Lady better, there was the feeling of informal hospitality which has existed at all the receptions this season, 'O mistress of the White House was ever more beloved than is Mrs. Coolidge. She has given every evidence of her interest in the Capital as a city, and has lent her name to further every move for charity, from the small card party or dance for raising funds for hr())mestand hospitals to the very large things of a more national character. THERE is a genuinely personal feeling about Mrs. Coolidge which attaches to few other First Ladies, because she has given of herself personally. She has answered most. of her little notes at her own desk in her own living room, writing long hand and with her pictures and birds and other pets about her, and somehow the atmosphere has permeated everything she has done. Her smile, her dress, her hearty greeting all leave an impress that will warm the future pages of White House history and make splendid reading. OTHER than the State reception the week has been unusually re- plete with interesting events, like the dinner at the Spanish em- bassy when the Ambassador of Spain and Senora de Padila invited Secretary Mellon, the Secretary-of War, Mr. Davis, ‘and the Secre- tary of the Navy and Mrs. Wilbur and the Ambassador to Madrid and Mrs. Hammond to celebrate King Alfonso XIII day with all the. ceremony the embassy can command. NOTHER interesting embassy dinner was that of the Ambassador of Great Britain and Lady Isabella Howard for the Speaker and | Mrs. Longworth, when several diplomats and members of the Senate |and House also were invited. Lady Isabella is a gracious hostess and ‘l very persistent one, who entertains frequently yet finds time to per- l.ox&ally!l%nk after several Catholic charities in which she is especially rested. e i Middle West came in for two of the most handsomely appointed | dinners of the season, the Vice President and Mrs. Dawes being Euests of Senator and Mrs. Charles 8. Deneen, at the Willard, and ghe Vice President-elect, Senator Charles Curtis, having a similar onor paid him by Mrs. Jacob Leander Loose at the Mayflower. . The ell chosen parties and the elaborate use of flowers at both dinners i3eft them quite representative.of the Winter list of dinner parties. | . HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY, who has just finished a portrait of Mrs. Loose, attended her dinner party, and she has enerously permitted it to be copied for use as a patroness of he charity ball the night of March 4. The Governor of Missouri will e the guest of Mrs. Loose in her box that night and the governors f almost all of the States of the Union—those who come for the ‘inaugural ceremonies—also will be present at the ball in the gov- rnors’ box. —_— STREAK of lurid color against the social horizon will be the Bal Boheme, given by the Arts Club of Washington, at the Willard |gomorrow night. The wardrobes of diplomats from all countries have lbeen drawn upon for native costume, though the ball is supposed to e Egyptian in tendency. Indéed Mahmoud Samy Pasha, the affable inister of Egypt, has fairly depleted the importers’ shops in New *York and elsewhere in his effort to assist in giving the Bal Boheme its rightful atmosphere and he and Mme. Samy Pasha, his lovely Egyptian wife, will be in Egyptian costume, seated in an Egyptian decorated box and watching the Egyptian parade go down the ball- room. The rarest of fabrics and jewels have been gathered in by the ‘Minister, and old prints and valuable pictures and books have been |. lent by him, from which to cull costume atterns. Everything will walk the board from King Tut himself own through the various MRS. MERWYN S. BENNION, Daughter of the Un- dersecretary of State ! and Mrs. J. A yachting trip down Tampa Bay also was made by the governor and Mrs. Trumbull as guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. McMasters. ‘This brings one to the realization that if governors of States are accompanied by the members of their respective staffs when they come to Wi for the inauguration of President Hoover, Col.
