CHICAGO, September 20.—Semi-an- nual migrations of city apartment dwell- ers, which involve over 150,000 families in Chicago alone, are gradually to be- come a thing of the past here. Renting concerns expect October 1 of this year to be onc of the last great moving days—occasions when whole sec- tions of the city seem to be on the move. At that time 50,000 families will prob- ably change their place of residence. « Thereafter the effect of a new “stag- gered” leasing system will be felt. In- stead of apartment leases calling for either an October or May termination they are to run out at various times during the year. Already nearly 25,000 leases have been placed on this new basis. ‘The success of the scheme locally is expected to result in its application in other cities which now face two annual periods of disruption. At those times business suffers with unsettled condi- tions for a week or two. It is figured by real estate men that apartment dwellers in Chicago change their residence once every two and a half years. Under the system of twao moving pe- riods, in May and October, a system pretty general in large cities of the country, a particular hardship is worked on school children. If moving is done, the child is- often taken away from school either at the end of the term or shortly after its beginning. As a result, the local superintendent of schools has appealed to parents to have their leases expire outside of the school year in order that they will not interfere with the pupils’ progress.
