LOS ANGELES, Calif., September 20 —Russell Beitzel took the witness stand yesterday in his trial for the alleged murder of Barbara Mauger and without emotion admitted that he had quarreled with t1.> girl while taking her for the motor ride on las:i June 24 from which she never returned. EI‘he former Philadelphian’s common law wife is asserted by the State to have been shot down on that last ride with Beitzel, who is accused of throw- ing her body from his car into the Hollywood Hills (l:anyon, where it was found a month later. NEW YORK, September 20.—Crime continues on an increase in New York City according to the auarterly report of Police Commissioner Warren for the period from April 1 to June 30. Murders, hold-ups and burglaries show an increase over the corresponding period of 1927. Murders increased also |* over the 1926 figures and there was a decrease in the number of hold-ups, while burglaries remained virtually the same.
