Jugoslavian Municipality Long formerly since the post-war Austro-Hungarian divorce, has reverted to its maiden CITY OF SPALATO date lines as the scene of recent rioting, is a name that will not be found on a map made in Jugoslavia. NOW NAMED ‘SPLIT Under Venetian Con- trol. Spalato, appearing in headlines anu “Like many other places in what was Austria-Hungary, the city, THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., naime, the Jugoslavian form, ‘Split,’” says a bulletin from the National Geo- graphic Society. “History supports the Italian name, ‘Spalato,”” because of the long pericd during which the city was under Venetian control; but the character of the population makes ‘Split’ fitting, for more than 90 per cent of the population is Jugoslav. “City in a Palace.” “Split is often referred to as ‘a city in a palace.’ The phrase is true enough in part, for nearly 10 per cent of Spilt's inhabitants live inside the walis of the | old palace of Emperor Diocletian, and for a long time the palace was the city. “Diocletian built the huge palace about 303 A. D. and moved there in 305 when he abdicated as Emperor. It .inclosed nine and a half acres of great roois, long corridors, and courtyards Diocletian lived only nine years afte: he entered his sumptuons residence. “The palace was built several miles from the great city of Salona where the Emperor’'s father had been a slave. Salona was destroyed in 639 by barv- barians from the north, and the sur- vivors took up their residences in tihe palace. This was the birth of Spalato, then called ‘Aspalathos.”’ Courty: became squares, some corridors werc made into streets, and other corridors and gr-at rooms were divided into smail houses and apartments. Tenements were built one above the other agains! the outer walls, some reachirg eight and nine stories. Spreads Beyond Walls. “It was only after centuries that ‘the city within a palace’ spilt over, and began to develop outside the old palace walls. This newer' development, is New Town or Novi Grad as distinguished from the Stari Grad inside the walls. “The Stari Grad is still the maze of dark, narrow, crooked ways, and tiny tenements and shops that it became soon after the surviving Salonians crept into its walls. This is the slum section of Split, this ‘city within a palace,’ a far cry from the almost Eastern splen- dor that reigned within those same walls during the brief life there of their builder. In front of many of the shops hang quaint, symbolical signs, a huge shoe for the cobbler, a basin for « barber’s shop, and so on. “To the visitor, the most interesting place inside the old palace is the former mausoleum of Diocletian which for cen- turies now has been the Christian ca- thedral of the city. All about the dark little structure are symbols of pagan- ism and secular activities. One of the cathedral's ornaments is a great black sphinx with its tracery of hieroglyphics. supposedly brought by the Emperor from Egypt to stand guard over his last resting place. Old Venetian Palaces Remain. “The Novi Grad is a city of parks and squares and reasonably wide, wel! ordered streets, faced by relatively mod- ern structures. Among the buildings are numerous old Venetian palaces built during the long regime of Venice from 1420 to 1797. “Modern Split, with its good quays and mole, is commercially the leading port of the eastern shore of the Adriatic It is particularly noted as a wine market. One may sit in one of the numerous cafes that face the Gaspodski Trg and review the vintages—provided he is careful enough to allot a sufficient number of meals to the experiment, and provided especially that he looks not too long on-<the heady wine of Brazza, one of the most famous of the Dalmatian wines. Passing to and fro he will see native peasants in colorful garb smoking their long stemmed pipes. Some of the farm women he will se2 wearing trousers the better to perform the tasks that husbands and fatheis leave to them. There are. besides, gypsies, Italians, Greeks, Albanians anc a sprinkling of Austrians still lingering on after their regime is ended.” Automobile Qusts Plane. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1928.° SOUVENIR OF PEACE TREATY PROCURED Former Ambassador Johnson to Present Pact Signatures to American Academy. PARIS (#).—A souvenir of the sign- ing of the multilateral peace pact, for tation to the America Academy, was obtained by Robert Underwood Johnson, former Ambassador to Rome.
