Big Aid to Aero Radio Seen in Eliminating Spark Plugs. By the Associated Press, DETROIT, September 20. — The Packard Motor Co. has announced the successful testing of an oil-burning airplane motor, the first of its kind ever developed. The demonstration was made here yesterday before a group of aeronaut- ical engineers in a regulation Stinson- Detroiter monoplane, piloted by Walter Lees and Capt. L. M. Woolson, the lat- ter designer of the engine. The motor, which company officials claim marks a revolutionary step in the development of airplane power, is a radial air-cooled type and develops 200 | horsepower. Uses Diesel Principle. It involves use of the Diesel principle of oil for fuel and eliminates gasoline. ignition systems, carburetors, spark plugs and other parts usually regarded as_trouble makers. The engine derives power by firing from compression in the cylinders, the Diesel action that heretofore has been aplied only in extremely heavy en- gines for power plants and boats. Aside from the simplicity and the ruggedness of design, the engine has fewer parts than the lightest gasoline engines now in_use. C, THURSDAY., SE AVIATION FINDS London-Paris Flight Held Proof of “Windmill’s” Ability. Cierva Declares Machine Could Have Done Even Better. By the Associated °r2ss. LE BQURGET, France, September 20.—~The autogyro, or “flying wind- mill,” in which the Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva made a successful flight across the English Channel Tuesday, crashed in the course of a trial flight here today and was badly damaged. BY JUAN DE LA’ CIERVA. Special Cable to The Star and the North American Newspaper* Alliance. PARIS September 20.—The machine | in which I have just finished my first flight from London to Paris is different from all other airplancs. It is the same machine with.which the demonstration flight around England was made in August by A. C. H. Rowson after com- peting in the King's cup race. The objective of all of these flights is to prove that a practical machine, based on the autogyro principle, has now been produced. l About 3,000 miles were covered by Rowson after which the machine was | found to be in perfect condition. Promised to Take Friend. Many years ago I promised an old | one may now have confidence in the autogyro plane. ‘The weather was wonderful. There was _practically no wind, although a wind would not have bothered me much, because my machine has very lit- tle sensitiveness to bumps. ‘The actual crossing over the Channel was especially delightful. It was made in glorious sunshine at 4,000 feet. This was the greatest height attained during the trip, because being free from anxiety concerning my landing, owing to the peculiarity of my machine, I chose the pleasure of flying very low. The average speed I worked at was 90 miles an hour, which pleases me, in view of the previous criticism concern- ing the slowness of my plane. Beat Goliath’s Time. As a matter of fact, it was most amusing to me to fly in company with Goliath, of the, regular Paris-London service, during the first part of the trip. I hod to reduce my speed to keep in company with him. Often I was com- pelled to slow down considerably in order not to lose him altogether. As this flight was only intended to give one more proof of the practical point I have attained and not to beat any world record, we took it easy, land- ing first at St. Inglebert, and then at Abbeville, My machine is capable of taking much more gasoline than I carried. The actual tank capacity of this machine is not more than 24 gallons, which allows only two hours’ flight. The trip was my first real flight of any distance, cither in an autogyro or any other kind of machine. In this connection I think it is in- teresting to point out that my task was THE SWAN BOAT much_esier because of the automatic stability of the autogyro, which takes care of itself and leaves the pilot free to study simultaneously his maps, com- passes and the ground below. An ordinary airplane takes a lot more piloting than an autogyro. Impressed by Reception. I was impressed by the enthusiastic reception I received when I landed at Le_Bourget. Yesterday I had another proof of the interest shown by experts when I was asked by Gen. Fortant, director general de L'Aeorunitique, and by M. Painleve, war minister, to give a demonstration flight over Le Bourget Field. I flew at a speed from 25 to 105 miles an hour, and when I descended my speed was not more than 15 miles. This performance apparently pressed M. Painleve a great deal. Day after tomorrow I intend to fly to Brussels, where I have been invited by the Royal Aero Club of Belgium. 1 will lend my autogyro to Mr. Rowsor, who may fly to Germany, while I go back to London to test some new types of gyros. ime PTEMBER 20, 1928:" sat down beside the soldier-chauffeur. From the engineering standpoint, the most brilliant achievement is claimed in the weight reduction of such a Diesel engine. Until now, the lightest Diesel plant ever built weighed 100 pounds per horsepower. The new plant weighs {ess than 3 pounds per horsepower. German engineers, who have been struggling for years in an effort to reduce the weight of Diesel plants, wereT quoted in recent newspaper dispatches as having given up the task as far as efforts to make the engine applicable for airplanes were concerned. Plans for mass-production of the en- gine are being held in abeyance by the Packard Co., pending further ground and air tests, officials said. o Drunken Driver Jailed.
