THE- EVENING -STAR, WASHINGTON, BLUE MURDER By Edmund Snell. Thrilling Story of a Young Secret Service Man’s Battle With Crime and Rescue of Girl in Peril. (Continued From Yesterday's Star.) SYNOPSIS. Alan Dighton. an adventurer with an ex- cellent war record. is summoned by his old ghief, Sir lan Teverner, hish up In the London 'secret_service. Corlitt. Sir Ian’s deputy. has been killed in ‘the Baronet's home by a new chemical weapon, the invention of Ahlborg, a chem- ist, and when Dighton arrives' Corlit's corpse is rapidly disintegrating. leaving be- hind it a blue powder. Sir Ian explains that every country in Europe control over the new weapo: end he is trying to get in to Daudot. - While Alan is left alone in the house he finds a hat with the initials “E. D.” in it. and while examining it he is confronted by an_intruder whom he knocks downstairs flees from the rooms just in time to escape the fumes which caused Corlitt’s death. Alan goes to a night club with Sir_Ian and the baronet's niece, Greta Haye. While there he meets Marney. Sir Tan's right-hand man. ~ Alan makes a great impression on Greta, but_he tells her he is leaving the next day. Sir Ian is sending him to Paris and Italy. Just as Alan boards his train he is handed an en- velope. Within it is a disc of jade green bone impressed with a lizard in Zold. Alan calls at the home of Daudot’s sweetheart in Paris and learns Daudot has attempted to dispose of stolen pearls. A man knocks at the door, Alan is shoved into another room and then he hears the hissing report of the “pocket death.” The girl is killed just as Corlitt was. Alan flees from the house in the wake of a man whom he loses in the crowd. He takes a train for Turin and finds Marney in his compartment. INSTALLMENT VIH. ARNEY thrust a cigar-case across at Dighton—a sort of pocketbook and case combined in which foreign paper money, stamps and newspaper cuttings hid all but the tips of five des- perate-looking cigars of the brand known in Italy as Toscano. ‘The other declined with thanks. “Awfully good of you, but I prefer a pipe.” Marney grunted and tucked the re- ceptacle out of sight. “So _you were in a hurry to quit the gay city, eh?” Dighton started. For some reason or other, looking at Marney, a picture floated across his mind of ravens he had seen hoppin_g around the site where the executioner’s block had stood at the Tower. His expression implied that he knew more than the other thought. “What do you know, Marney?” “I know you were in a devilish hurry. Another guy standing by me at the window wanted to take bets with me that you'd miss. it. “You can say what you like here in a reasonable kind of voice, by the way. I've been the whole length of the train and there's not a soul on it that matters.” He spat out a plece of chewed leaf. “The feller with money to throw about was a wool buyer from York- shire. There's an Italian senator and his secretary, back from some con- vention or other, a couple of vamps out to see what they can pick up at Bordighera or San Remo and a fair proportion of stand-aloof English folk looking for the sun. What have you been doing to your hands?” He shot out the guestion so quickly that his companion jumped. “That?—oh, that's the breath of our friend with the green monocle.” He lowered his voice. “He came into Daudot's flat while I was there and wiped out a French- woman.”” i Marney whistled softly. 3 “And you're alive to tell the tale!” Dighton laughed. “I‘%n fllveu'rlght enough—and still kicking. She'd pushed me into another room. , I hadn't the.least idea who was coming, mind you. I suspected it might be our friend, but I wasn’t sure. I was standing on the other side of the door when he blazed off. A little ater I caught sight of him from the bal- cony—" Mylmey moved his head slowly up and down. “And he never knew you were there! Holy Mike! but isn't that just won- derful!” “It was getting out after him,” pur- sued the other, “that I picked up this rash. I'd tied a towel round my face, but I hadn’t thought about my hands.” The American gazed at him for some moments in silence. | “Some people,” he asserted, “are born under a lucky star. It's no credit to 'em—no credit whatever. They just can’t help themselves. Others—iake Corlitt, for example, received a visit from the guy in the white mask only once—and they don’t survive five min- utes to tell gou their impressions! You packed your grips then and beat it, eh?” “You bet I did. I'd done all T had to do in Paris and had no desire to be arrested by the French. police on the strength of the testimony of a con- cierge. This thing’ll be in all the pa- pers in a couple of shakes.” “What's the idea, Marney?” “Idea!” echoed the other. “Why, it comes out pat—like dropping nickels into a ut machine! D'you hap- pen to have made any more of these sensational discoveries?” ‘The other smiled and shook his head. “I'm afraid that's about all—except perhaps that the Lizard was wearing the same gray hat and blue trench coat as I saw in London. I was too high up to get a look at his face.” Marney leaned back in his seat and crossed his legs. “D'you know what I think, young feller? In my opinion that guy’'s an ex-employe of some diplomatic service or other, gone wrong. You see,.Digh- ton, he knows too much for a mere outsider. He knew the secret of Tav- erner’s stairs, for example. That looks queer, doesn’t it? The odd thing is that he should have been counting on Daudot for one business when the chief was negotiating with him for an- other.” “How long has he been at the game?" asked Dighton. The other slapped his thigh. “A matter of weeks, that's all, as far as I can figure it out. The vul- tures were just gathering around Ahl- borg’s outfit, seeing which of ’em could peck out his brain first, when the Lizard sailed like a streak of blue lightning over the horizon and threw in_a few unwelcome complications, Dighton wrinkled his forehead. “He's out for the Pocket Death, like the rest of us.” “Yep!” snapped Marney; “that’s a dead certainty. It's equally evident that he’s out for loot. I've suspected 1t before—and the story of the pearls corroborates it.” “The question is,” declared Dighton, “is he trying to secure Ahlborg’s in- vention for some other power—or for himself? Is he a secret agent, with a profitable side-line—or is his interest in the Pocket Death purely personal? It has been extraordinarily useful to him up to date, you must remember.” “The value of this new dope,” sald the American, “is that it’s more or less silent, and that it reduces its vic- tims to powder within a reasonably short space of time. If it could be altered so0's to leave out that blue stain it'd be more valuable still. In ordinary warfare the color business is of little consequence; but from the point of view of a crooking wanting to cover up his tracks, it matters a whole lot. I don’t mind betting you Ahlborg's con- centrating on that defect now.” Dighton reflected. It was evident that his companion preferred discussing the merits and de- merits of the explosive rather than committing himself to an opinion on the questions raised. “He's firing the stuff off pretty reck- lessly,” he announced after a long si- lence. “Covering up tracks may be of vital importance to him at the mo- ment, but, from our point of view, he’s been recklessly extravagant ~ with charges that- are practically impossible to replace. Unless, of course, he is confident of replacing them.” Marney glanced round. “How d'you mean?” “He may have entered into some reement for the purchase of the stuff already,” returned Dighton. “It's un- likely, I grant you, but at this juncture all sorts of unlikely things are liable to happen. There's still another way of looking at it: If the Lizard’s the crook we imagine him to be, he may be put- ting his services at anybody's disposal —providing the price is big enough.” “In_which case—?" queried Mar- ney, dropping the end of his Toscano and ctushing it under his heel. “In which case Ahlborg may be pay- ing him to get that gun back!" “Stranger!” sald the other with a look of undisguised admiration, “you've a lot of sound common-sense in that big head of yours. It's a whole educa- tion to listen to you!" i (Continued in Tomorrow's PRESIDENT’S ACTION AWAITED IN RAIL ROW Union Representatives Return to Homes After Mediation Board Ends Efforts. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 20.—Union of- ficlals representing the 70,000 Western trainmen and conductors disbanded their conferences here yesterday and re- turned to their homes to await action of President Coolidge as the next move in the strike situation confronting 55 tar.) Marney shook his head. “You can make your mind easy on that score, old scout. - Certain people’ll be bribed to keep their mouths shut —or spirited away if a bribe doesn’t do it. Ahlborg’s new dope's too rich a mixture for a machine like the French public, or any other public, for the matter of that. They’ll be looking out for the man with that gun, sure enough, but_there'll be no publicity about it.” “Then you think—" “I'think you were right in shifting your quarters—dead right. You're paid to take risks, but not unnecessary ones.” He reached up and pressed the bell. “I don't know how you feel” he continued, “but I'd like to drink the health of a feller who's encountered the’ Lizard twice in—how long is it?” Dighton made a rapid calculation. “About 43 hours, as near as I can make it.” The figure astonished himself. So much had happened since Corlitt's call at his office with a proposition that he could have sworn he had been indulg- ing in underground warfare for at least a week. “If you'll take my advice,” said the older man when the drinks were brought, “you won't go out for trouble. You won't get grouching because a week slips by without anything in par- ticular happening. You'll just thank those lucky stars I was talking about just now. If you do strikeea. dull week —the next’ll be a cracker-jack!"” He raised his glass. “Well, here’s how!” “Cheerio!” murmured Dighton. 3 He was beginning to like Marney. It was growing upon him every minute that somewhere beneath that horny, case-hardened exterior there lurked a heart of gold—more than that, a sense of humor to which its possessor re- l:::ed for some reason to give expres- sion. audot was in with the other chap,” he announced presently, “I found out that much. One of his reasons for crossing the Channel was to get rid of a rope of pearls they'd stolen.” Marney frowned. “My!” he muttered half to himself, “that’s interesting!” His cigar had gone out, and he lit it from the flame of a battered brass pocket lighter. “Why didn't he wait to see the Chief?” he broke out suddently. “Did you find out that?” “Because,” said Dighton, “he hap- pens to be dead!" The other screwed his paper into a ball and tossed it into the opposite cor- ner. He pulled down the blind over the door on the corridor side and faced Dighton, both hands resting on his knegs. “Who killed him?” “The Lizard, I suppose.” “What for?” “Because he heard he was going to Taverner.” Marney extended one hand, palm up- permost, to an invisible audience. “Gee! What d'you know about that?” he demanded. “All from the mouths of babes and sucklingsl Can you beat it!” Dighten burst out laughing. Western railroads. 3 ‘The union rerreunt.atlves spent the day in informa! conference discussing the situation as created yesterday when the Federal Board of Mediation termi- nated its efforts to arbitrate the wage dispute on 1roundx that the unions, and carriers could not agree. The union sought wage increases ranging from 10 to 18 per cent, the railroads countering with an offer amounting: to about 72 per cent, con- tingent upon new working rules. The unions said: they would accept the 71 per cent, but not the rules. KENTUCKY BUTCHER HELD IN DUAL DEATH INQUIRY Woman'’s' ‘Body ' Found Buried in Cellir—Dead Man Discovered * in Garden.
