Ganna Walska, wife of Harold McCor- mick. harvester millionaire, was held by customs authorities today pending decision as to whether it is dutiable. Mme. Walska contends she is a non- resident of the United States and that her goods purchased abroad are not subject to the import t: The Gov- ernment’s contention is that as the wife of Mr. McCormick she is a resi- dent of this country and not entitled to exemption. 5 ] There was no effort by Mme. Wal- ska to hide her possession or their value, customs authorities said, a full declaration being made. Mme. Driven to the West Philadelphia sta- tion by Mrs. George Horace Lorimer, she apparently was not recognized by crowds there or by any of her fellow engers on the trip to Washington. TRIO HELD ON BOND. Man, Wife and Daughter Accused on Liquor Charge. Charged with the illegal sale of liquor, and second-offense possession, John Samuel Harley, colored, Tl years old, of 2609 Wade road southeast, demanded a jury trial when arraigned in Police Court yesterday. His bond was fixed at $1,500. His wife, Mrs. Martha Harley, and their daughter, Victoria Atkins, were also charged with possession, and -each released on bond of $500. The trio was arrested Saturday night in a raid by police of the eleventh pre- cinct, under Lieut. Sidney J. Marks. Harley was first charged with posses- sion when his residence was raided two months ago. At that time police claimed they found an_ old-fashioned bar in the basement, which has since been dismantled. INVITED TO JAVA PARLEY.| Interior Department Gets Bid to Pan-Pacific Congress. ‘The Interior Department today an- nounced the receipt of an invitation sent to the Department of State from J. H. Van Royen, Minister at Washing- ton of the Netherlands government to participate in the fourth Pan-Pacific Science Congress, to be held at Batavia, Java, May 10 and 25 next year. Agri- culture will be the outstanding topic of the conference, the Minister sald. ‘The first meeting of the congress was inaugurated at Honolulu in 1920 and subsequently was held in Australis and Japan. All branches of the physical and biological sciences bearing on tropical life and conditions will be discussed at the congress, which will be under the patronage of the Netherlands- Indies government. Excursions, Mr. van Royen announced, will be made to various places of industrial, scientific and historical interests on the island.
