United States open golf champion, dcalt Walter Hagen. British open titleholder. the latter's first match-play defeat on American soil in years, when he won the 36-hole match | at the Philmont Country Club today, 2 up and 1 to play. The match was the third in a series of five for the | unofficial world title. Hagen previously | won two matches. Farrell was not so accurate as the Brivish champion with either wood or iron through the fairway. but on the putting greens he beat Hagen at the latter's own game. Hagen had several three-putt greens and at other times missed casy putts for halyzs or wins. Farrell. on the other hafid, repeatedly saved himself by recovering from poor second shots by remarkable chips and deadly putts. Honors were even on the first 18 holes. although Hagen was never up at any time. The latter ran down a long putt on the last green to square the match, In the afternoon Hagen three-putted the first two greens placing Farrell 2 up. Hagen later squared the match at the twenty-third. but Farrell went ah-ad again on the twenty-fifth and never again was behind. The fourth match of the series will be played in New York next week.
