1000 AT CONGERT 15 SASON X ;Pan-Amgrican Esplanade Isi Scene of Colorful Musi- cal Event. An audience of more than 1,000 peo- ple, including many members of the , diplomatic corps,. gathered on the Esplanade and in the gardens of the ! Pan-American (Inion Buildirg % bear | a program of Latin-American music | last night. ¥ The concert marks the formal open- fing of the season’s musical affairs of ‘Washington. These programs aim to I present the music of Central and South | America to North American audiences *and promote international exchange. The original plan for the concerts al- ilowed a seating capacity of 600, but chairs_ were placed on the gardens and ‘other ‘seats outlined the lovely pool. ¥ There has never been & night when fthe grounds of the Pan-American ¥ Building looked more lovely. The pur- iple, green’ and’ blue lights on the “building at the rear, the red and blue sof the band's uniforms with ther gold fcord. and the many-colored shawls | fand ‘furs that aimed to keep the chill; Afrom the women in the audience made Ta brilliant picture. % Dr. L. S. Rowe, director general of .the Union, presided at the program and *gave . thanl to artists. Franklin ;Adams, counselor, was in charge of the ‘program, which showed excellent bal- {ance of new selections, heard in the YUnited States for the rst time, with old #avorites that were much more familiar, ‘such as>the Meican “Estrellita” the ,barbaric “Queen of the Night,” the sec- ficuban “La Paloma” and the brilliantiy fond movement of the suite “Babylon™ S)\'rittcn by Elie of Haiti. s Panama Music Given. | Perhaps the greatest interest of the fpvening centered in the initial appear- \ance in this country of Prof.- Alberto Galimany, leader of the National Band ipf Parama. Prof. Galimany not only sonducted a typical Panamen rhythm %n his first composition, the pasillo en- ititled “Amistad” (Friendship), but also ‘showed clever adaptation of the United tates march style. He said that the hemes were all native to Panama, but {he tried to illustrate in this march the ‘nion of the United States and Central ‘America. Prof. Galimany will remain Ain Washington for several weeks and ‘has accepted the invitation to conduct me of his.own compositions in con- Ferts to be played by the different serv- fce bands. i The one singer on the pi WaSs Raquel Nieto of Mexico, a slender, red- eaded girl, quite the antithesis of the exican type. She has a clear colora- ura voice. Beautiful natural quality is ::meined with artistic skill that is espe- ially noticeable in the smoothness of Ber scales in the florid bravura work of $uch’songs as her own “La Primrosa” nd the well known air “Charmant iseau” with flute David's “Pearl of Brazil. ngs, with the exception rere by Mexican composers and seemed combine chiefly sad romantic themes vith clever melodic invention. ~This fwas her first appearance in Washington. £ The other guest soloist of the evening was a_ youthful Cuban pianist, Nilo Menendez, who has been heard here reviously. He has rare talent and an z\di\'ldual touch. The three Cuban dances by Cervantes were interesting, hut Lecuona’s “The Coming of the Son of Cina” was more so. Senor Menendez layed them all with artistic restraint. is own two compositions, “The De- arture of th> Son of .China,” which fhowed clever syncopation and modern tyle, and “La Jota,” also were much pplauded. Xylophonist Heard. Louls Goucher, xylophonist, and Bandmaster G. De Giorgi, cornetist, Poth gave solo selections. The former played works by composers of Venezuela d Mexico and the latter works by mposers of Honduras and Cuba. %} 'The United States Navy Band showed 4dmirable trainin -ordination ¥Suipac! ere played here for United States. beginning for what mise to be an exceptionally bril- nt music season. It’s Well to Avoid A Stiff Living Room Some rooms are so stiff and formal that they make you un- comfortable. The pieces are arranged with too much regu larity. No one feels at ease If a living room is to be a place in which the family really lives it must possess a certain degrec of informal comfort. Chairs should be selected for thei easy qualities as well as thei beauty, and small tables shoulo be distributed about the room for the convenience of the oc cupants. Smart Prizes for Bridge Parties If your wits are at an end for smart prizes for your bridge party, do like some of the other Washington Smart Set are doing and give a modish litile piece of furniture. End tables. Tea Tables, Lamps, Stools. frivolous little Tilt Top Tables and scores of other delightful pieces may be chosen for the prizes. Color and Comfort for the Smart Living Room There are two elements upon which the modern living room must depend if it is to be a success—Color and Comfort Vastly different, one can not make up for the absence of the other; in fact, with one miss ing, the other falls short in the duty that it might perform Who can be comfortable in a drab, uninteresting room, or in one that is color-crowded? On the other hand, beauty of colo; will not be enjoyed where eas: is entirely lacking. Build yow rooms in harmony, with color: beautifully blended throughout and with comfort and conveni- ence in every piece. Don't con- sider furniture for its in dividual beauty and usefulness but from the viewpoint of yow home. Imagine it there with your other furnishings—will it add or detract from its sur- roundings? Will it increase the color and comfort there” It will if wisely chosen. Colorful Backgrounds Enliven Bleak Rooms There need be no such thing as a bleak room in your home these days—no matter if you live in an apartment whose only vista is a gloomy court Sunny curtains at the window will give the light a warm golden glow, and colorful back- grounds will make the room: as lively and interesting a: though the sun streamed ir upon them all day long Choose rich, subdued tones of yellow, orange and red for the predominating colors and yov will achieve a cheery effect.
