Rodgers, 23-year-old song writer and actress of Alexandria, who is known along Broadway by her | professional name, Gladys Gale, yester- day charatcerized A. Barnard Merry, ew_York Elnxwrlght. as an _“incurable Serving With a Purpose HE thought behind Perry & Walsh mortu- ary service is to- meet every = requirement - tinent to a PERFECT SERVICE. _ We do not promise anything that we do not perform: such has exemplified our efforts in the eyes of our discrim- inating clientele. SEPTEMBER 9. 1928—-PART 1 sufferer from physco-neurotic ahell shock” in discussing the breaking of her engagement to the well known Broadway figure, who last night was taken into custody by Alexandria police and held for a sanity examination. Following a call at Miss Rodgers’ home in Alexandria last night, where he was denied the priiviege of talking to her, Merry was found walking along the river front, poorly dressed, waving his arms and acting irrationally. He has been committed to the city jail pending further investigation of the case. ““Mr. Merry was terribly shell shocked while serving in France,” Rodgers, “and although everything has been done to restore his health his case is regarded as hopeless by all his friends, and little remains to be done to aid him. Served as Orderly. “He served as an orderly for Gen. Cornclius Vanderbilt prior to going overseas. and upon his return Gen. Vanderbilt took a friendly interest in Arthur and even sent him to a hospital | at Tupper Lake, N. Y. At one time he was stationed at Fort Humphreys, Va. “I first met Mr. Merry at a party | givem: for newspaper men the opening night of the revue, “Keep Shuffling,” for which I wrote the song hit “Har- lem Rose.” He became interested in my work and asked me to write the lyric for a comedy, “Cease Firing,” which | he was writing. I consented, and later | agreed also to play the lead. “Through our professional relation- ship we became fast friends, our friend- ship finally resulting in our engage- ment to be married on the stage the opering night of “Cease Firing,” which would have opened on Broadway last month had plans materialized. “Plans progressed smoothly until onc night in July when Mr. Merry burst into the apartment of the producer, Andy Wright, and created a very un- pleasant scene before a party of friends, including myself, Mrs. Wright and sev- eral persons who were financially inter- and had gathered said Miss | t; hear the music I had written for the show. “Although Mr. Merry had one stage success, ‘The Third Degree,’ and his | first part of ‘Cease Firing’ was excellent, his work suddenly took a turn for the | worse and plans for producing his work were abandoned. On several occasions thereafter he threatened the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Wright as well as my own. “I determined to break our engage- ment. Despite this Mr. Merry continued to worry me, even coming here to my home on several occasions to effect rec- onciliation.” Among the papers found on Merry’'s person was one relating to a decree of absolute divorce granted his former wife, Catharine Mathison Merry, in the Superior Court of ¢ Middlesex County, Conn., on June 23, 1924. Mrs. Merry charged her husband with “intolerable cruelty.” HARD FIGHT IN NEW YORK IS CONCEDED BY MACHOLD LOCUST VALLEY. N. Y., September 8—H. Edmund Machold, chairman of the Republican State committee, to- night told Republican workers they had a hard fight on their hands to carry New York State for Hoover and Curtis. The statement was to 1,000 campaign workers, gathered at the annual poli- tical clambake, given by F. Trubee Davison, Assistant Secretary of War, at his estate here. e “It’'s no use fooling ourselves” Mr. Machold said. “We all want to see this State go for Hoover and Curtis this Fall, but let us look the facts in the face. We must admit we have a hard fight on our hands, but if we limecvi the hting spirit into our campaign, I am gugrv thgls %tate, as usual, will be found in the Republican column on Novem- ber 6.
