4 087,357 LISTED OF JEWISH FAITH Commerce Report Shows . 2,948 Congregations and 1,131 Synagogues in U. S. The Department of Commerce an-| nounces that, according to the returns Teceived, there were 2948 congrega- tions and 4,087,357 persons of the Jew- ish faith living in the cities and the villages in which the congregations | were located in the United States in 1826. Because these data for 1916 were | not collected on the same basis no com- parable figures are available. The total expenditures for 1926, as reported by 1235 congregations, amounted to $16,445,235, including $1 294.953 for current expenses and im- provements, $1,131.719 for benevolences, 2.018.563 not classified. T! value of gogue buildings (includ- ing furniture and equipment), as re- ported by 1.151 congregations for 1926, was $100.890.669. | Of the 2,948 congregations reporting | in 1926 there were 2.855 located in | urban_territory (incorporated places of | 2,500 inhabitants or more) and 93 were in rural areas. Of the total number of Jews living in the places having con- gregations. 4.071.889 were in urban ter- ritory and 15.468 in rural areas; and of | the fotal expenditures. 1,202 urban con- | gregations reported $16.334.214 and 33 rural congregations $111,021. The value | of symagogue buildings reported by | 0_urban congregations was $100.- 314 169, and that reported by 31 rural | congregations was $573.500. Sabbath schools were reported by 5 eongregations in 1926, with 4.247 ficers and teachers and 6! and 631 congregations reported w day _schools. with 2.183 officers and | teachers and '4 pupils. SOCIAL BRETHREN CHURCHES GAIN Al Parishes of This Denomination Are Located in State of Illinois. * There were in the United States in 1926, according to census returns re- ceived by the Department of Commerce, 22 churches of the Social Brethren. with 1214 members. as compared with 19 churches and 950 members reported in 1916. All of these churches were located in the State of Ilinois and 21, with 1.050 members. were in the rural ter-| ritory. The total expenditures for 1926, as re- ported by 16 churches. amounted m‘ $4,019. including $3.519 for current ex- | penses and improvements and $300 for | benevolences. etc.. and $200 not classi- | fied. The total expenditures reported by ten churches in 1916 were $817. The value of church edifices (including fur- niture and equipment). as reported by 19 churehes for 1926, was $24.500. which may be compared with §15,000 reported by 18 churches in 1916. | Sunday schools were reported by seven | churches of this denomination in 1926, |* with 42 officers and teachers and 425/ fcholars.
