FINANCI "LONDON WORRIED BY GOLD SITUATION Morgenthau's Statements Fail to Check Dishoarding—Becomes Major Market Influence. By Cable to The Star. LONDON, June 5—The securities market during the last week was sub- Jected to three major influences: First, the Spanish bombing of a German battleship; second, withdrawal, as the result of strong pressure by industry and finance, of the new national de- fense contribution, and, third, ac- centuation of uncertainty over the gold position. The gold situation was the main market influence as the week closed. It was felt more strongly in the gold mining section, but the underlying un- easiness as to the future price of gold was a restraining influence through- out. Secretary Morgenthau’s statements failed to check dishoarding, and the use of the word “imminent” was taken to signify possible action in the not distant future. The policy of the British authorities in allowing the discount to widen to 7'2d on the dollar affords no clue as to the ultimate intentions, causes per- plexity and raises the question of how long resources of the exchange fund will be able to absorb the increasing amounts of gold. The total amount dishoarded in the last 11 days was over £15,000,000. (Copyright, 1937, by the North American Newspaper Alliance, Inc.) lNVESTING.COMPANIES NEW YORK. Baltimore Markets Epecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, June 5—A dull mar- ket and only moderate demand throughout the week resulted in a decrease in live-poultry quotations. The drop affected almost all lines and ranged from 1 cent on some broilers and on fowl to as much as 3 cents on ducks. The market was easy throughout the week. In broilers, Rocks are sell- ing 22a24, which is only a fraction below last week's quotations, and mixed colors, at 22a23, are about & cent lower. . Leghorns recorded a gen- eral decline of a cent, those weighing 24 to 215 pounds brmging 19; 1% to 2 pounds, 17a18, and smaller stock selling down to 15a16. In fowl Rocks are a cent lower at 19, with a few bringing 20, mixed colors are selling mostly 17a18 and Leghorns are bring- ing only 14a16. Roosters are steady at 10al2, but Pekin ducks are 3 cents lower at 12a14. Egg Prices Narrow. Although egg prices fluctuated slightly under continued fairly heavy receipts, the end of this week found quotations practically the same as last week. Current receipts are selling 19a 20, large hennery whites, 21, and me- dium-size hennery whites, 20. Several items of local and nearby garden truck made their appearance on the market during the week and supplies are increasing generally, Nearby pointed type cabbage ar- rived on the market and is selling 35a 40 bushel. Nearby peas of large pod varieties are bringing mostly 1.25a1.50 bushel, With poorer stock selling down to 75, Nearby squash also made its appear- ance and is bringing mostly 1.00 bushel. Spinach is somewhat higher at 40a 50 bushel, with canners' stock selling 15a17':. Sweep potatoes continue steady at 1.40a1 50 bushel for Eastern Shore No. Is and 1.15a1.25 for un- graded stock. Nearby Big Boston lettuce is selling 20a30 bushel, with Iceberg type bring- ing 40a50. Maryland asparagus is sell- ing 1.00a2.75 per dozen-bunch crate, according to grade. Nearby strawberries are command- ing as high as 4.50 crate for a few of fine quality, but are bringing most- ly 2.75a3.75. Cattle Receipts Light. In the live stock market total ar- rivals in the cattle department were seasonally light and numbered less than during the previous week, accord- ing to the local bureau of the Depart- | ment of Agriculture. Trading ruled active where steers were concerned, and a modest number of heifers and mixed yearlings found ready outlet. Cows found rather slug- gish movement early in the week, but later 1mproved demand prompted in- | creased activity on that class that closed brisk. Bulks followed along the same lines as a week earlier, and at times outlet appeared none too de- pendable. Sluggish condition in the dressed market put somewhat of a check on strengthening prices, and small supplies appeared as the prin- cipal factor that boosted prices of most classes higher than a week ago. Swers | and yearlings gained mostly 25 and in | some late sales looked more than 25| Cows finished | mostly 25 higher, and bulls only | steady with last week's close. Sales of medium and good grades of | steers this week were largely of 800- | 1,125 pounds and went mostly within | a spread of 10.50a11.85. Low me- dium and plain grade light weights were noted at 8.00a10.25. Those | at the inside price represented as straight grassers. Medium to choice | heifers released at 9.00a10.75 and a few above, while odd head of very plain kinds ranged down to 8.00 and below. Fat cows of strictly good quality were | scarce, a few sales uncovered up to 7.50 and above, a near choice weighty | beef .type individual at 850. Plain and medium grades late in the week | were bought mainly at 6.25 a 7.00; old, thin light weight 4.25 and emaciated kinds 4.00 and less for some in doubtful health. Plain and medium grades of bulls earned 6.00a 7.00, mostly, best sausage kinds here | and there selling up to 7.25, and some few good grade fat butcher offerings | up to 8.50. Vealers Move Lower. Vealer prices started the current | week on a steady keel, but good grades | lost 50 Tuesday, and medium and lesser | grades a like amount later, and closing | market was weak at the 50 downturn. Late sales of good grades were 9.00a9.50 mostly, a large number of Friday’s run still in first hands at a late hour of trading. Plain and medium grades were quoted 6.50a8.50, and culls sold down to 5.00. Friday's hog market was quiet and the day's list called for prices that were steady with Thursday's quota- tions. Good and choice grades of 170- 210 pound barrows and gilts were listed at 11.65a11.90, latter price top for the day. Comparable grades scaling 220-250 pounds were scheduled at 11.15a11.50 and heighweight butch- ers quoted down to 10.50 and below. Good and choice 140-160 pound light lights earned 11.15a11.50; 120-140 pounds, 10.40a10.75, and good packing S0Ws, 9.40a10.00. Medium grade sows and also stags were quoted from around 9.00 downward. Hogs from “doubtful” areas are not represented in prices. New crop lamb prices lost mostly 50, and the few head of aged stock went at steady rates. There was not enough action Friday to make a mar- ket test. Good and choice ewe and wether lambs of this Spring crop turned at 11.50a12.50 Thursday, bulk of sales from 12.00 down. Due to price strengthening at some competi- tive markets some local sales agencies considered choice offerings eNgible late in the week to still sell up to 12.50 or possibly above for strictly choice ewes and wethers. Late sales of plain and medium grades were from 10.50 down, many under 10.00. Fat clipped slaughter ewes were taken at 4.00 down, according to weight and con- dition. Grain Market. Closing prices were: Wheat—No. 2 red Winter, garlicky, spot domestic, 1.37; June delivery not quoted. Corn— No. 2 yellow, domestic, 1.25; Western billing at a premium over this price; cob corn, nominal. Oats—No. 2 white, domestic, 65a75; No. 3, 64a74.
