RESORTS. WATERWAY GIVES PLEASANT TRIP : Trent Route in Canada Taps Yachting Playground Area. OTTAWA, June 5—In boat yards throughout the land the ring of ham- mer on caulking iron and the sound * of scraper on hull and spar prove two things: That the vacation season draws near; though this a motorized age, there are many who prefer water- ways to highways. According to '.heI Canadian Travel Bureau there are in Canada many interesting and easily accessible trips for the yachtsman, motor boat and outboard enthusiast and canoeist. One of these routes is “the Trent Waterway which follows an inland route between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay and avoids the| wide waters of Lakes Ontario, Erie | and Huron. The Trent Waterway is a canalized “ eombination of the Trent River to Rice Lake, Otanabee River through * Peterborough to Stoney Lake, then the picturesque Kawartha Lake chain to * Lake Simcoe, on through Lake Couch- iching and down the rugged Severn River to Georgian Bay. The distance from lake to bay is 240 miles, of which only 20 miles are actual canal cut- tings. Size of Boats Limited. The canal has not as yet been com- pleted, there being dams and locks uncompleted on the Lower Severn, but imarine railways at Big Chute and *Ragged Rapids permit of through | navigation. At present boats of 134- | foot length and 6-foot draught can | navigate from Lake Ontario to Peter- borough, from Peterborough to Lake Simcoe the limitation is 127-foot length, 6-foot draught; from Swift Rapids down to Georgian Bay the +limitation is 56-foot length, 13!2-foot beam and 4-foot draught. The region through which the waterway runs was once the haunt of redmen, but now is a favorite play- ground of the white man. Several Indian reserves along the route are of interest and native guides can be had for fishing and other trips. The ~huge lift lock at Peterborough and the smaller one at Kirkfield, the floating bridge at Chemong Lake, his- torical associations, scenery and sport, the availability of supplies, all are in- ducements which draw cruisers to the sheltered waters ol the Trent system. | | Waters and Happy Lands.” | boats may enter Canada for a period As He Steps Note: Alfred E. In fact, at this the waterway. It is about 100 miles due north of Oswego across Lake On- tario and the same distance from Rochester. The route from Oswego and St. Lawrence ports follows the Bay of Quinte while from Rochester and western lake ports the shortest route is by the Murray Canal, which cuts across the isthmus just north of the old “Carrying Place,” where boats were portaged in early days. There are no lockage fees, the route is buoyed, and navigation charts are available at moderate cost. Gen- eral maps can be had free by any one wishing to plan a cruise this year through a district which the Indians ‘aplly named Kawartha, “Bright Pleasure extending from the date of entry to October 1 following by obtaining a permit from the collector of customs at the port of entry. THE SUNDAY. STAR, WASHINGTION, D. C., JUNE 6, 1937—PART TWO. Al Smith Hears Familiar “Hello, Al!” Off Liner at Naples point let me say that kind and friendly treatment is characteristic of the Italian people generally. They have to a great degree the sunny disposition that seems to go with sunny Italy. I cannot resist the temptation to speak about the night scene from the hotel balcony. One realizes it is all that the fravel books say about it when the moon silvers the bay of Naples and old man Vesuvius is smoking in the moonlight. When I was handed a copy of the Herald Tribune I realized that for the first time since I learned to read I had been just one week without a newspaper. Visited Ruins of Pompeii. While in Naples we followed the custom of most tourists, visiting the ruins of Pompeli and Herculaneum and enjoying the road round the mountain. It is somewhat like the New York State road around Storm King. Speaking of highways, I was in- formed that during the administration of Premier Mussolini the entire road system in Italy was rebuilt, and the public roads compare favorably with our own, although not as wide as the recently constructed roads in the United States. In addition they have privately constructed toll roads, and the owners are entitled to collect a toll for 25 years, at the end of which time they revert to the state. All along the line on the sides of buildings are expressions of approval of the rule of the Premier, as well as extracts from many of his public speeches. For a long time I was wondering what was the matter. There appeared to be a quiet not known in the United States, par- ticularly in New York City, where the Mayor was obliged to inaugurate an anti-noise campaign. I discovered that chauffeurs are not permitted to —_— 9 SORTS., PENNSYLVANIA. M=THE=——== NiTTany|ioNnS STATE_COLLEGE, PA. Hish in the Mountains where eool nishts follow slorious days. The police directing trafic have no whistles to blow. They wear black clothes with white gloves and regulate traffic by the motion of their hands. The white gloves against the black background are easy to see and take the place of stop and go signals. Surprised By Cleanliness. I was astonished at the cleaniness of Naples and Rome. Their street cleaners are efficient, especially in Rome, where they are constantly flushing the streets, and water is very plentiful. In fact, fountains with their strong flow of water are all over Rome. Public improvements are apparent on all sides. By direction of the Premier, square blocks of houses are being demolished to make a wide entrance to St. Peter’s, and the pew stadium, called after Mussolini, is built entirely of marble, surrounded by heroic statues symbolizing athletic games of all kinds. I was informed that the Premier is very proud of the stadium, as one of his purposes is RESORTS. [4 to improve physically the youth of Ttaly. Orie could write volumes about the cathedrals and churches of Rome and the treasures in the way of works of art that they contain. A few years ago I was chairman of a committee that celebrated the 150th anniversary of St. Peters, the first Catholic church erected on Manhattan Island, and we all spoke about its age. Compared to the ages of the churches in Rome, it is only a baby. Many of the Romans’ cathedrals were instituted in the early centuries of Christianity, and what is more, many of them existed in their present form long before Columbus discovered America. Thrill of Meeting Americans. One of the real thrills comes from meeting people from the United States. It makes one feel that the world is not such a big place after all. As we entered the ruins of Pompeii I was approached by a man who requested me to pose for a picture. Talking to him, I found that he lived at one time in my old district on the lower end of Manhattan. At the American college I saw students from all parts of the United States, and at the Dominican priory I spoke to a priest RESORTS. N You’ll like this North-woods from my own parish in New York. At this point I want to observe that throughout Naples and Rome the priests appear on the streets, in the hotel lobbies, and in all other public places, dressed in their cassocks. Railroad Service Improved. Probably the greatest improvement in Italy under Mussolini is the railroad service. The trains between Naples and Rome compare favorably with our own firsi-class railroads and the operation is by electricity generated from water power. The train we came on rolled into the station in Rome just on the minute. I am in- formed that only a few years ago they were as much as one hour late on & 2 hour and 45 minute run. Along the line of the raflroad we passed through a farming section and I noticed that very few farmers live on the farm. Unlike our American farmers, they live in nearby villages and go to the farm to work just as ot e el e et RESORTS, RI Hqflg!flil“‘:.i(lfl, DEL. BELHAVE| orchestra, dancing. $22. ) GEORGE_W.
