SPORTS THE SUNDAY S TAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, JUNE 6, 1937—PART ONE SPORTS B—11 French Trap Surprises With Victory in Charles Town Feature WINS SHENANDOAK WITH BRAVE FINISK Mare Staves Off Driving Soupcon—Canynge Barely Defeats Mint Bud. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. HARLES TOWN, W. Va, June 5.—W. Kirkley's French Trap. a 6-year-old mare, crossed the wise ones at the track here today to grab the Shenandoah Handicap, week end feature of the Charles Town Jockey Club's card Never a winner until this week, the daughter of The Satrap staged a brave finish to win the 7-furlong affair in 1:26 1 5 to the surprise of the crowd of about 8,000. Nicely handled by Jockey Garrett, the mare scored by a half- | length over D. P. Brown's’Soupcon, | ® long shot, which finished with a | neck advantage over W. A. Jones' Timber Lady. The favored J. B Belk's Wise Sister was a poor fourth. Leon Staves Off Soupcon. IMBER LADY took the start at the break, while French Trap was eased along with the pace. Go- ing into the far turn, Wise Sister and Envee did not rally as expected, but French Trap went on to get the faltering Timber Lady and under the whip staved off Soupcon’s bid. The big week end crowd wagered more than $100,000 through the mu- tuel windows on a day ideal for racing. The dailv double, coupling C. Brining’s Canynge and Mrs. C. E Willxon's Radial, was wortk $107.80 for $2. Close for Canyagne. N THE second race, Canynge Was | given a great brush by Mint Bud | with the two finishing a neck apart There was some booing when the Judges gave the race to Canynge. In the third race, Radial was boot- | ®d home by Jockey Root after the favorite, Fred Warning, at the head of the stretch. appeared to have the race in the bag Jockey W. Strawson, 6—0, 6—4. 4 L3 | Broadway (Haines) ) OCHRANES S 3 AMENT £ Selections for Fast Track at Charles Town Tomorrow. (BEST BET—PASS.) FIRST RACE—MERIDIAN TIME, SCHLEY GOLD, MARY ALLEN. MERIDIAN TIME disappointed the other day here. This 2-year- old has flashed more speed than any of these opponents. SCHLEY GOLD has turned in some fine efforts here and at Hagerstown. MARY ALLEN will be in the money if running back to her last try here. SECOND RACE-—HANDLEY, LADY GLASGOW, PETEE LAD. HANDLEY is a better sprinier than anything in this race and has been brought around to sharp form. LADY GLASGOW is always dangerous. PETEE LAD is fast enough to handle the others and take down third money. THIRD RACE—NYACK, REIGH TETRARCH, BLACK RIBBON A few days ago NYACK was sent out in a sprint and flashed fine speed for a little more than a half mile. REIGH TEIRARCH has been turning in consistent sprint efforts lately. BLACK RIBBON ran in the money against a field of this class during the past week. FOURTH RACE—LIFE LI HENRYMAN, TULEYRIES RUBY. LIFE LINE gets into this sprint nicely and can take down the prize with a good performance. HENRY - MAN is good at this distance and will take the offering if the top one makes any mistakes. TULEY- RIES RUBY looks very safe for the third slot. FIFTH RACE—BARNSTORMER, SYLVIA G., HAPPY ROAD. During the past week, BARN- STORMER was beaten off by She Knows in a fast event, but the mare has nothing opposing her here that can outfoot her. SYLVIA G. has shown a liking for this dis- tance. HAPPY ROAD will be along for the third split. SIXTH RACE—PASS, LIGHT AC- TION, FIFE. PASS looked very good in win- ning at this distance last week. He is the best looking shot on the program. LIGHT ACTION is go- ing in fine style but doesn't rank up with the first one. FIFE has been pretty consistent here and should have no trouble taking down the small end of the purse. SEVENIH RACE—CROWDED HOURS, CANIMAR, JIM BROWN. CROWDED HOURS gave a fine account of himself the other day at this distance and put on a fast finish to take second money. CANIMAR is the only one likely to offer much competition. JIM BROWN can beat the others a long way behind the first two choices. EIGHTH RACE—TELL IT, LOCH LONDON, MISS SYMPHONY. 1t this substitute is used, TELL IT should canter in, followed by LOCH LONDON and MISS. SYM- PHONY.
