FINANCIA STEEL CONSUMPTION HOLDS BRISK PACE Only Minor Difficulties Arise in Deliveries During Strikes at Midwestern Plants. W the Associated Precs. . CLEVELAND, June 5—Daily Metal | Week, extending the current decline Trade today says: ‘While some inconvenience to con- sumers is resulting because of strikes at important Midwestern steel plants, the difficulties are minor. So fas as can be learned. no business been diverted to mills not affect by the strikes. Consumption has been holding at @ rapid pace, though the tendency is | downward. Uncertainty over the labor situation is not calculated to aid gen- eral industrial activity. The expecta- tions are the slide in steel consumption as the Summer progresses will be gradual rather than sharp. Producers still backlogs. The automotive industry i supplying considerably less support | to finished steel demand than was true # few months ago. But farm imple- ment and tractor manufacturers still | are going strong. Freight car builders continue well engaged on old orders. Bolt prices have been extended for third quarter. RUSSELL IS RE ELECTED HAT INSTITUTE CHIEF Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 5.—Slackening industrial demand and widespread rainfall over the parched Midwest pushed commodity prices down this to more than two months. ‘With strikes snapping at the heels of many companies, managements have drawn on sizable inventories rather than stepping into the market for further stocks. Then, too, analysts pointed out demand during the nearby future was uncertain in many con- sumer lines, clouded by the hint of a Summer slump in industry. This was reflected in such prices as rubber, turpentine, lumber and bur- lap, all of which slipped back. Bi- tuminous coal and tin stood eout against the tide, registering small gains. The Associated Press weighted index of 35 important wholesale staples fell to 80.50 per cent of the 1926 average, from 91.36 last week and compared with 71.85 a year ago. The latest figure was 7 per cent under the year's high. Declines in Majority. Declining commodities held a 3-to-1 edge numerically over those turning in advances in this list. Agricultural staples were unanimous in seeking lower ground as the patter of rain over the Great Plains sent estimates of probable outturn this season soaring. Corn, wheat, oats, rye and cotton all moved off some- what. Live stock drifted lower as hogs and cattle weakened. Lambs chalked up a healty advance as official estimates pointed toward a reduction in the number of animals available for mar- ket during the next few months. Items entering the market basket dipped into new low ground for the | year. Although demand is reported to have been fairly well maintained, supplies expanded with the passing weeks. Eggs, flour and lamd fell back, while cocoa moved up a notch, Textiles at New Low. Textiles slumped to a new bottom for the past seven months, with cot- | ton cloth and silk in the van.
