IN DEFENSE against no-trump con= tracts the universally accepted lead is that of fourth-best from the longest and strongest suit. To depart from this accepted formula is gen- | erally unwise, as it is apt to fool | partner. For example, the lead of | the deuce from a 5-card suit will tend t6 make partner think that you actu- ally hold only a 4-card suit. However, as in all phases of Bridge, it is oc- tactics. West won the trick with the ace and led a third diamond and declarer started to count tricks. If the two remaining diamonds were divided, as indicated by West's opening lead, he would surely lose one more trick in that suit and the ace of hearts. Accordingly, if he also lost a spade, he would be set one trick. Therefore, he decided his best per- centage play would be to finesse for the jack of hearts. Accordingly he led the deuce from dummy and played the ten in his own hand. Now |’ West won with the jack, cashed two diamonds and subsequently gave his partner a heart trick to beat the con- tract two tricks. However, if declarer had figured out that West originally held five diamonds, he would have realized that his best chance of making the con- tract would lie in finding East with the ace of hearts and one spade honor. Accordingly, he would have gone up with the king of hearts on the first heart lead, led the jack of spades and finessed if West failed to cover. Now, although East would get in with both the king of spades and the ace of hearts, his partner woyld have no chance of cashing any dia- monds, and the contract would have been made.
