B—4 By the 'Way— (Continued From Third Page.) sighted, commented on the horrible limitations of lorgnettes when trying to find on2’s friends in a gathering, and the moment of trepidation upon ciscovering that they have been left at home. Mrs. Russell-Bennett was overheard to say to Mrs. Cummings, “Without mine I am utterly helpless and in my case it does not make a public enemy number one, rather public enemies numbering one—thousand. 1y Capt. Don Umberto Cugia, Naval Attache of the Italian Em- bassy, well-known wit of the diplomatic corps, furnished great amusement to a nearby guest at a recent smart diplomatic recep- tion. Approaching the attractive wife of an American Naval Of- ficer, he greeted her with Continental courtliness. Whereupon the lady in question, quite innocently began to tell him about her husband. It seems that her husband has just left for duty in the Far East. Due to the unsettled conditions there, the State De- artment had advised against her accompanying him. Several imes she told Capt. Cugia how upset and lonely she felt and then innocently ended the conversation ... “and now I am ALL ALONE!” Whereupon Cugia looked at her sympathetically, leaned over and, raising a finger to his lips, emitted an audible “Shhhhhhhh,” and with a stage whisper said, “My wife is still here!” A young girl entered a smart modernistic shop on Con- necticut avenue and, approaching the manageress, explained that she had studied interior decorating in New York. Feel- ing, however, that her course was somewhat stilted and stereotyped, she would like information as to where she might get instruction on “careless arrangement”! A bit nonplussed by such an appeal, the manageress tactfully and gracefully sped this embryonic Elsie De Wolfe on her way, for how could she have known that the harassed mother of any of our debutantes could have given her a perfect demonstration of “careless arrangement”—in her own daughter‘s bedroom! x kX X \VHEN the lovely titian-haired wife of the First Secretary of the Brazilian Embassy, Senora Bueno do Prado, left us this spring for a visit to Rio, we expected to welcome her back this fall. How- ever, scarcely in Washington two years, Senor do Prado has been recalled to the home office; so popular Senora do Prado will not return to America, as her husband will leave early in January to join her in Brazil. * K X Xk T THE Laughlin wedding reception Saturday whom should we encounter but Andrew Wiley. Andrew left the early part of last Winter with a scientific expedition from Harvard, bound in s%arch of the “missing link” rumored and accredited to the wilds | of Asia. | An ardent voyager, with Russia, Persia and Europe already chalked up on his slate, we sincerely hope that he will spend a few months in the home town, prior to taking to the road again. * ok ox % THE Halloween dance slated to take place tomorrow evening at Normandy Farms still remains a Dutch-treat affair. Many dinners have been arranged preceding it and a large contingent from the diplomatic set will be in evidence. However, there is one change, since the original idea was fancy dress. A number of persons opened their trunks and found that the overalls they were looking for had mysteriously disappeared; so some of the guests are going to wear the usual black tie evening attire. Never- theless, we predict that there will be all kinds of costumes, from | tennis dresses and overalls to formal evening dress. In other words, the party may turn out to be like the one given several years ago by Mrs. James F. Curtis, who asked her guests to wear their favorite costume—variety being the spice of life, the picture presented an amusing one! during the intermissions and the us- Musicale Planned. ual dancing party will follow the | The Columbian Women of the George Washington University will give their card party and musicale at the Ward- man Park Hotel on Saturday, Novem- ber 6.
