NEW YORK, Oct. 28.—A strong forward drive in the curb market to- day lost headway rapidly in the after- noon and as the final hour approached prices were mixed, with modest gains predominating. Special Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, Oct. 28.—Assuming that the panic stage of the stock market has passed, what about busi- ness? This important question is discussed in the weekly bulletin of the Berens Financial News Bureau. The chances are, says the bureau in a copyrighted article, “that business will grow pro- gressively worse.” The bureau points out that “it is not our job to paint an exaggerated, ugly picture any more than it is our job to paint an unduly optimistic pic- ture at any time. We merely report the facts, the trend in all truthful- ness, and leave it up to our friends to make their own conclusions. “The slump is already under way in almost. every direction. Thousands of men are being layed off in the steel ihdustry and many thousands more would be layed off except for the share-the-work policy of many com- panies. The injury to purchasing power of the public by reason of the market panic has been too severe not to show itself in business. “The facts today are that in many lines of business, sales are dropping rapidly. Many corporations are caught with huge inventories, as re- peatedly reported in previous bulle- tins. This means that profit margins will be sharply curtailed and, in many instances, entirely erased. The net result, too, will be to clog business with merchandise pressing for sale. “This condition probably will pre- vail at least for a while, even if the covery from the panic depths. In 1929, the last period comparable to today, the stock market in the last month and a half, and even into the early months of 1930, had a tre- mendous recovery. But business meanwhile slumped persistently in the initial stages of the long depression. “Since the Government at Washing- ton presently discounts the importance of the stock market, it probably will take no broad steps of a stimulating character until it is convinced th legitimate business, too, is suffering. The Government will measure business | mostly by unemployment. The chances are that there will be considerably more unemployment in the near fu- ture.” INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK, Oct. 25 @ .—New York Security Dealers’ Assoc: (Noon Quotations.)
