D PLANS A FOR 40 AGED Social Security Board Act Qualifications Eased on Residence Here. Plans were under way today to ex- tend relief to about 400 aged and destitute persons in the District who have been unable to obtain assistance. Approval of this aid by the Social Becurity Board was announced yes- terday by Regional Director G. R. Parker. Hitherto relief to the aged has been confined to citizens of the United | States who had lived here at least five of the last nine years. Under the revised program necessary will be given those who have lived in the District 12 months, even though they are not American citizens, It is estimated about 400 will benefit from the ruling. District funds will supple- ment these Federal grants. The Federal funds will be used as follows: Old-age assistance, $101,- 312.67; aid to blind, $3,458.70; aid to dependent children, $42,856.47. These grants, together with District funds, will provide an estimated aid of $25 each for 3,325 aged needy persons, $26 for 187 blind persons and $15 for 3,671 dependent children. RED CROSS PARLEY SET Chairman Cary T. Grayson of the Red Cross announced yesterday the 1938 convention will be held in San Francisco May 2 to 5. The de(‘lslnn‘ was reached at a meeting of the Central Committee. This will be the first national con- vention of the organization beld on the West Coast and follows a recom- endation adopted at the last con- vention. LA GUARDIA GROUP ACTS The Fusioneers, a non-partisan or- ganization supporting Mayor La Guardia in his campaign for re-elec- tion, has opened an office at room 305, 1406 G street, for the benefit of | | New Yorkers in the District. The second proposal by the Wash- ington Gas Light Co. Hyattsville and Alexandria gas com- panies is scheduled to be thrown into discard today by the Public Utilities Commission. The Washington company yester- day asked permission to withdraw its petition, which was filed Iast March, and the commission was ex- pected to approve today.
