APPLERATE IS RETIRED TODAY He, for 32 Years Was Chief Surgeon of Southern Rail- road, Started Color Tests. Dr. William A. Applegate, 19, for 32 years chief surgeon of the Southern Railroad, was retired today. He had been with the Southern since March 15, 1901, and has seen the surgical stafy grow from 60 to 600 men. Acting on Dr. Applegate's ad- vice the Southern in 1907 inaugur- ated tests for color preception and hearing among trainmen and telegraphefs and was a ploneer in maintaining safety in this way. Each three years the doctor traveled more than 10,000 miles inspecting employes. Held in deep regard by his asso- ciates, word of his impending retire- ment brought letters from all over the country. An out-of-doors man by nature, Dr. Applegate plans to retire to his farm— planned and built by himself and one helper—near Solomons Island, Md Dr. Applegate was born in Yellow Springs, Ohio, November 10, 1857, and received his preliminary education at Antioch College. He was graduated from the medical department of Har- vary University in 1882. While thers he studied anatomy under Oliver Wen- dell Homes, father of the jurist. Since his appointment as chief surgeon he has made his home in Washington He will be succeeded by Dr. Glenn L Jones. TURKEYS TO BE BIGGER THIS YEAR, GROWERS SAY U. 8. An appeal for meeting quarters for a boys’ club now being organized by the First Ward Citizens’ Association was sent out yesterday following a meeting Tuesday night, when 26 youngsters appeared before the group to signify their desire for a club. Mrs. Belle Cutler Parker, secretary of the association, said that a““spare room or basement” was badly needed for a place where the youngsters could gather. Approximately 120 boys will join the club when it is un- der way, she said. Safety Council’s Late Founder to Be Honored The memory of Dr. Joseph A. Holmes, first director of the Bureau of Mines, Interior Department, will be honored today on the 25th anni- versary of the launching of a gen- eral safety movement at a meeting in Chicago. A wreath will be placed on Dr. Holmes' grave in Rock Creek Ceme- tery. Dr. Holmes, who died July 13, 1915, was one of 30 persons who attended the meeting. He was widely known as a pioneer in the industrial safety movement and has been cred- |'ited generally with initiating the slo- | gan “safety first.” The Chicago meeting resulted in | the formation of the National Safety Council, now numpering thousands of business firms and individuals. Daniel Harrington, chief engineer of the Health and Safety branch of the Bureau of Mines, will represent the bureau in the ceremony at the grave, set for 4 pm. Dr. Harold F. Enlows of the American Red Cross will represent that organization and the National Safety Council. John D. Chandler, Eagle Scout Troop 34, Boy Scouts of America, will place the wreath as an evidence of the interest of his organization in the cause of safety. Dr. Holmes' son, James S.
