Patent Office, UITE a party it was ... the one tossed Tuesday night to launch the town's newest temple of chow mein and floor shows from New York, the Bam- boo Gardens . . . & party that started with some powerful potion probably designed by the Spartans of old to give them their stamina, lasted through a couple of brightly garbed floor shows and much pleasant dance music by Russ Cullen’s lads until those w. k. wee, small hours were yell- ing for help . . . Virginia Macias was there, having for the moment crawled out from under the many tasks attendent upon helping brother Pete open the Heigh-Ho; so were Marty Rubin and Irv Levick of the Heigh-Ho band and handsome Mrs, Levick and Leo, the suave charge d’'affaires of the Maclas manse on Connecticut avenue . . . Lots of mu- gic people turned up, too, to lend an ear to this new band Russ leads and to approve . . . the Sidney (music by Sidney) Seidenmans, the Maurice Kafkas, the Moe Baers . . press was on hand, to gaz proval that approached awe amazement at the miraculous doings of Henry Wong and Hugh Lang, the powers behind the transformation of the spot into a modern, up-to-the- minute sleek room, with pastel walls and indirect lighting and nary a trace of the La Paree that used to be ... In that setting, with that bright, spirited dance music, it can't miss « « . The only thing the boys have forgotten is a lounge room out of range for retiring into while the fel- low currently impersonating a master of ceremonies is taking up time that might be devoted to something else. * * ¢ More flash bulbs will pop tonight . . . more gayety will run rampant, or whatever gayety does when on the loose ... For tonight the town's blades and their damsels will turn out en masse to welcome back to the after-dark scene Pete Macias 'Heigh-Ho . . . Also done over from doorman to north room, with lilting dance music that may become the talk of the town's dancers, with dances by Lunina and Lattanz, who made their debut in this country at Heigh-Ho's opening last year . . . CAMERA work has started at Para- mount’s Hollywood studio on “Daughter of Shanghai,” in which Anna May Wong returns to the screen after an absence of two years. Philip Ahn, whose most recent film role was with- James Cagney in “Something to Sing About,” has been assigned the leading male role oppo- site Miss Wong, it was announced by William Le Baron, managing director of production. Larry Crabbe has been given a featured role in the picture, the first heavy part he has portrayed since becoming a film star.
