Ey the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 30.—Curb stocks, after early strength, lost part of their gains today. Buoyancy of industrial specialties and mining issues kept the list on the upside after utilities became uneven and oils sagged. Aluminum Co. of America was up 2!2 at midafternoon and Pittsburgh Plate Glass was 2'y higher. Other gainers included American Cyanamid “B,” Columbia Oil & Gaso- line, McWilliams Dredging and Pan- American Airway new. Higher among mining issues were Lake Shore Mines, Newmont Mining and Wright Har- greaves. Tilting downward in the oil sector were Creole Petroleum, Pantepec Oil and Sunray Oil. VIRGINIA TOBACCO v |Brisk Selling Marks Start of Season at Eleven Old Belt Centers. 8y the Assoctated Press. Selling was brisk as Virginia's 11 old belt tobacco markets opened today. Prices generally were as high or higher than at last season's opening. Growers at several markets agreed prospects were good for the opening day's average price to top the 1936 opening day average. Some markets reported a wide price range during the first hours of selling. At Danville, the largest of the State's old belt markets, a “break” of more than 1,000,000 pounds was of- fered. Prices covered a wide range with medium leaf selling higher than last year. The best offerings, how- ever, sold for about the same price as on last season's opening day. An estimated 300,000 pounds of the bright leaf was on the floors of Rocky Mount’s two warehouses. Up to 10:45 a.m. approximately 45,000 pounds had been sold at the first warehouse to open, bringing an average price of 24 cents per pound. Selling was to take up at the second warehouse after con- clusion of the opening sales on the first floor. The floors of three warehouses at Petersburg were crowded at the open- ing of the auctioning and warehouse men predicted the day’s sales would at least equal the 151,162 pounds moved on the opening day last year. Prices were high at the Petersburg opening. Warehouse men said indica- tions were the day’s average would top the $17.17 per hundredweight average of 1936’s opening. At Martinsville the grades were Ye- ported moderate, bringing an average of around 20 cents per pound. The price ran in the forties, however, and showed strength in the thirties. Ware- housemen estimated the day's sales would aggregate 200,000 pounds. Growers expressed satisfaction with the price outlook, but were agreed gen- erally that late August rains hampered the development of the crop. The other Virginia markets are South Boston, South Hill, Chase City, Clarksville, Kinbridge, Brookneal and Lawrenceville. . Washington Exchange _ SALES. Capital Transit Co.—2 at 10. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 30.—The domestic copper market continued in divergent trends today, owing to the failure of some important sellers to meet yesterday's 1-cent reduction. Metal circles heard of sales at 1214 cents a pound, up '. cent from the level established yesterday by custom smelter offerings. On Monday the price was reduced 1 cent from the 14- cent level which had ruled since last April. Export copper was quiet around | 12.15 cents, unchanged from the pre- vious day. Yesterday large primary producers | were reported unwilling to go to 12| ¢ cents, although they dropped to 13 cents Monday after a custom smelter had offered copper at that figure. | Selling circles were disinclined to| make predictions as to the effect of the price reductions in mmulmmg; domestic demand, but the fractional | stepping up from 12 cents was inter- | preted as a sign of improvement. Re- | cently buying had been at low ebb. | Copper futures were about % of a cent higher in early dealings. Scrap | copper was boosted ' cent, tollcv\mg: & % -cent cut. In other leading non-ferrous metals | trading was quiet with prices fairly in line with the previous day. DOLLAR GOES DOWN IN LONDON DEALINGS By the Associated Press.
