CHICAGO, September 30.—Take $750 a month, subtract bills for Mrs. Irene Castle McLaughlin's household maintenance, food, tips, telephone, & nurse and her son’s tuition and what has she got? “Thirty dollars and 70 cents,” the , dancing darling’ of 20 years agc found after figur- ing her budget “until I'm blue in the face.” Then she asked the rhetorical ques- tion: “How on earth can I keep up with my facials, massage and clothes on $30.70? It's impossible.” Her third husband, Maj. Frederic McLaughlin, hockey team owner and coffee merchant, has agreed to pay $750 a month temporary alimony | pending outcome of her divorve pro- ceedings. She charged cruelty and he answered with a denial and a charge she was extravagant. Daughter to Study in East. As she saw her son. Electricity Problem of BY HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE, Associated Press Science Editor. NEW YORK, September 30.— Achievement of complete electrical mastery over steering steamships was announced yesterday by the Sperry Gyroscope Co. The tanker Esso Bayonne came into port yesterday after a trial with a new type of electrical steering mo- tors. They kept the rudder, in effect, “in gear” all the time with all the ship’s steering wheals. They made it possible for the first time on a commercial vessel for the helmsmen to switch instantly from one steering wheel to another or from one steering system to another. Here- tofqre there has been delay. The shifts are not infrequent, for steamers have usually three steer- ing controls. One is on the bridge, another on the flying bridge, a third below decks. If one system fails, an- other is ready. Needs of navigation also cause shifts. Women who fuss about food . .. may learn how to better please their men, if they shop at this store. With the new motors it makes no difference how a wheel is turned when not in use. The motors do all the lining up. Being synchronous, the motors of each wheel are always ready to pick up the rudder whenever another wheel may leave it without allowing the ship to turn more than one-sixth of a degree. Three years ago the Unlted States WASHINGTON, Navy, using the gyropilots, installed a master electrical control over all steering wheels by use of thyration tubes.
