SENATOR OPPOSES SLASHING RELIEF Green Says Reduction of U. S. Expenses Shouldn’t Be in That Direction. In striving to reduce Government expenditures, the next session of Con- gress should not do so at the expense of aid to the unemployed, in the opinion of Senator Green, Democrat, ©of Rhode Island. Feeding and clothing those in need {s a paramount obligation, the Senator said. He expressed the view, however, that plans to bring the budget into balance at the next session should include efforts to put through a Gov- ernment reorganization program. The Rhode Island Senator, who has Just returned to the Capital for a few days, suggested it might be desirable to dispose of some of the more press- ing legislative problems before Janu- ary, but had no information as to whether Congress will be called into session before the regular meeting date. The bill to regulate wages and hours in industry and farm legislation loom as major issues early in the next session, Green said. : e Wheat Consumption. People of Britain are expected to eonsume 6 bushels of wheat per head of population this year. FURNITURE CO. NEW YORK, September 30.—Miss Gertrude O’Keefe, 37-year-old Wall Street typist, was freed of a first de- gree murder charge yesterday in con- nection with the slaying of George O. Frank, New York Stock Exchange clearing house teller. ‘The charge was dropped in Felony Court when Magistrate Charles Solo- mon, after a 90-minute hearing this morning on the State’s attempt to build up & case of circumstantial evi- dence, declared there was ‘“nothing in the law” on which he could hold her for the grand jury. The sallow-cheeked defendant, whom Frank had addressed as “Dear Goddess” in a series of 178 love let~ ters written to her during his seven years’ courtship, smiled broadly when Magistrate Solomon dismissed the charge. Miss O'Keefe still faced a charge of violation of the Sullivan law against possession of fire arms, as an after- .| math of the discovery by police of & .32-caliber revolver in her drab fur- nished room in Brooklyn. She was released in $1,000 bail on the gun charge. Ballistics experts established, how- ever, that the murder weapon was an automatic pistol, whereas Miss O'Keefe's gun was a revolver. From the time of her arrest, through 30 hours of police questioning, Miss O'Keefe admitted that she had “more provocation and more justification than anybody on earth for killing George Frank,” but maintained her innocence, TRANSFER OF C. Farren, president of the North Randle Community Citi- rens' Association, to praise their work in addressing a special meeting of the Executive Committee of the associa- tion at his home last night, “The present personnel has done an excellent job and given us splendid co-operation,” he said, and called at- | tention to their efforts in clearing | parts of Anacostia Park.
