Lejeune suffered a fall some years ago- when he was superintendent at V. M. I. and the injury caused him to lose his power of gpeech. Since, his friends say, he hasfnade a remarkable recovery, and although he had to re- learn language, he has lately become so proficient that he again has been able to deliver speeches, The general's friends here consider it unusudl that after he had traveled extensively over the world and been subjected to dangers of war and storm, he should come to the com- parative peace of Lexington—a small town in Virginia—and there meet with an accident that kept him in a coma for about a month and caused him to lose his speech. For Gen. Le- jeune as & young man was ship- wrecked in a hurricane in Samoa, went through the Spanish-American War, was on duty in the Philippines in 1908-09, commanded the brigade of Marines during the occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico, in April, 1914, and later was in command of the regiment of Marines that formed the pacifying force. Was in War Battles. Gen. Lejeune participated in the Battles of St. Mihiel, Blanc Mont Ridge, the Meuse-Argonne and in the march to the Rhine, and com- manded the 2nd Division during the World War. The retiring superintendent of Vir- ginia Military Institute served as com- mandant of the Marine Corps here from July 1, 1920, until March 5, 1929, when he retired from the serv- ice following 39 years' active duty. He has been superintendent of Vir- ginia Military Institute since that time. Born in Pointe Coupee Parish, La., January 10, 1867, Gen.
