CRITCISH HITS BSHDPNANNIG Dispute Over Convention Program Brings Reply on Communism Charge. By the Associated Press. CINCINNATI, September 30.—De- fending & program prepared for the Episcopal Church’s general convention | here October 6-28 the Cincinnati| Church League of Industrial Democ- racy replied yesterday to criticism from Bishop William T. Manning of New York with th sertion that “any statement which attempts to identify the C. L. I.D. philosophy with that of organized communism simply dis- plays either an obvious ignorance of what & Communist is or a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.” In a letter sent to four Episcopal Church papers Tuesday, Bishop Man- ning wrote there had been no denial from officers of the lewgue that the “C. L. I. D. stands for the abolition of private ownership, for the elimina- tion of all profit in industry or busi- ness. for the overthrow of our eco- nomic system, for the establishment of a complete collectivism and for the attainment of these objectives by ‘the necessary political and economic action.’” Stanley Matthews, president of the Cincinnati branch of the league, said that while not officially created or recognized by the general convention, the C. L. I. D. nevertheless was defi- nitely a part of the church body be- cause of & preponderantly overlapping membership. “As such,” he said, “they as pro- fessed Christians are morally bound to uphold the teachings and principles of Christ. Where modern practices in industry and business run con- trary to these principles, C. L. I. D, members must, in all conscience, op- pose them, regardless of whether such practices are defended, sanctioned, condoned or ignored by other members of the church, whether clerical or lay and of whatever eminence. “Since a denial of the existence of God is a fundamental principle of the Marxian communism, * * * it is an impossibility to be at the same time & Communist and a member of the C.L. L D. “A more careful reading than seems to have been given of the resolution adopted by the C. L. I. D. in Phila- delphia last February will reveal that it rejects private ownership only ‘of things upon which the lives of all depend,’ and favors only ‘collective ownership and democratic control of the common means of life.’” ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL!
