B—12 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1936. CHRYSLER IVED ONGANECHARGES Motor Magnate and Em- ploye Admit Violating Federal Regulations. By the Associated Press. BALTIMORE, October 29.—A Fed- eral judge imposed fines of $§11 on ‘Walter P. Chrysler after the motor magnate pleaded guilty to two charges of violating Federal game regulations Yyesterday. Similar fines were imposed on Wil- Mam P. Pritchett, superintendent of Chrysler's Eastern Shore estate, on similar charges. Both men were ac- cused of hunting without having a Federal stamp on their licenses and with using repeating shotguns which did not have the magazine capacity reduced. affixed, but had left them with- their coats in the car when Federal game wardéns found them last December. Chrysler said he had an automatic shotgun in the hlind from which he was shooting, but said he had only fired & double-barreled gun he also had. “But I do mot want Pritchett to take all the responsibility,” he added. “There were five shells in the auto- matic and I must have put them in. I should have known that there was no plug.” ‘The plugs are inserted in the maga- zine to reduce the capacity to two shells, e e Dye Causes Magic Growth. Dr. Joseph Sellei, chief medical di- rector of the Hungarian State Rail- ways, has grown plants five times their ordinary size and says that he has done it with a fertilizer he in- vented. It is a form of dye, diluted in water and poured over the seed, every species of plant having a dif- ferent dose. Several years of ex- perimenting have shown that not only do the plants grow to gigantic size when nourished with the fertilizer, Pritchett said he and Chrysler had | but mature much more quickly than State hunting licenses with the stamps | usual. EOTH MAKWELL REVENS DEFEAGE Confers With Attorney Re- garding Second Trial Set for November 16. By a Staff Correspondent of The 3tar. ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 29.— Preparing for a second trial on the murder charge placed against )m', in the “slipper slaying” of her moun- taineer father, Miss Edith Maxwell, 22, former Wise, Va., school teacher, conferred with her attorney, Charles | Henry Smith, here yesterday. The second trial is scheduled to start November 16. It was ordered by the Virginia Supreme Court of Ap- peals in a recent review holding that the verdict of first-degree murder re- turned by a Wise County jury was not justified by the evidence. The court will hear Smith's plea for a| change of venue at its session in Richmond, November 7. Miss Maxwell was sentenced to a 25-year prison term after the first trial. After spending 14 months in Jall, she was released under a $6,000 bond recently until the second trial is completed. In preparation for her defense, she told Attorney Smith the same story which she related at her first trial. She told how she returned home late the night of July 21, 1935; how her father, apparently intoxicated, threatened to kill her with a knife, knocked her over a chair, and how she finally struck him over the head with a slipper. ¢+ She related that she rushed out of the house, wandered a few minutes dnd returned to.find her father, Trigg Maxwell, apparently not affected by the slipper blow. He went back to bed, got up an hour later and col- lapsed, she said. Edith then ran out to get a doctor, who pronounced her father dead. Last night Miss Maxwell returned to the farm near Richmond, where she is living with her mother, brother and two younger sisters, e — Harmodio Arias, who recently re- tired as President of Panama, has Joined his family in London. David Garrick, the leading English tragic actor of the eighteenth cen- tury, was a most miserly man and, by the queer quirk of human nature, was always censuring some one .else for their miserliness.
