FINANCIAL, NURTHAM[Rl[‘,AN TRANSACTIONS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE . QUTPUT MOUNTS Sharp Gam Brlngs Profit of $1.60 a Share for 12 Months. BY EDWARD C. STONE. New high records in electric output by the subsidiaries of the North American Co., including the Potomac Electric Power Co, were important factors in the earning of $1.60 per share in the 12 months ended Sep- tember 30, against $1.23 a year ago, President J. F. Fogarty announced in & letter to stockholders received here today. The third quarter's output ‘was 11.19 per cent greater than for the corresponding period in 1935 and 220 per cent better than the previ- ous high record established in the fourth quarter of 1935. i There was comparatively little Bummer dullness to retard the con- tinued growth of business during the third quarter of 1936, the report adds. Operating revenues for the year end- ed September 30 increased 9 per cent, and electric revenues alone increased 8.21 per cent. Greater fuel costs resulted from the «drought in the Middle Western States because steam electric generating plants had to be operated more fully to replace water power. Heavy rain- fall in September ended this extra expense, probably for the remainder of 1936. The gain in net earnings for the year was 20.46 per cent over last year. Total provisions for taxes amounted to $16,663,964, up 16 per cent. Appropriations for deprecia- tion reserves totaled $13,983,928, or 12.27 per cent of operating revenues, equal to $1.63 per share on common stock. A year ago such appropria- ions were equivalent to $1.58 a share. President Fogarty states that North American’s subsidiaries secured 26,- 473 new customers during the year for residential electric service. Com- pared with the 12 months’ period end- ed September 30, 1935, sales to resi- dential customers increased 10 per cent, sales to commercial customers 12 per cent and sales to industrial customers 19 per cent. Representa- tives of the Potomac Electric Power Co. placed a high percentage of in- creased lighting in the homes of Washington, the report adds. In- gtallation of electric refrigerators, yanges and air-conditioning equip- ment has steadily increased, the presi- gent says. Bank Loans Up $400,000,000. The Federal Reserve Board's latest review covering September and the first three weeks of October states that Joans of reporting member banks in Jeading cities, other than loang on gecurities, continued to increase In Beptember and the first half of Octo- ber. On October 14 the volume of these loans was more than $400,000,000 | Jarger than on July 29. About half of this increase was at New York City banks and the remainder principally at banks in Western and Southern cities. Holdings of United States Govern- Iment obligations have declined in re- cent weeks at New York City banks and have increased somewhat at other banks. Deposits of reporting banks fhave continued to increase. Excess reserves of member banks in. treased by $410,000.000 in the five weeks ending October 21, reflecting a reduction of $30C,000,000 in Treasury holdings of cash and balances at the Reserve banks and an increase of $250,000,000 in monetary gold stock, the effects of which were partially off- #et by a seasonal increase in money i circulation and a further growth m pequired reserves, the report says. Heard in Financial Distriet. The Securities and Exchange Com- #nission announces that the Washing- ton National Cemetery Corp. of Wash- ington has filed a registration state- ment covering $225,000 of 5 per cent mortgage bonds due October 1, 1946, and 450 shares of no par value com- mon stock. One share of common stock is to be given with each $500 bond purchased, it is stated. The net proceeds are to be applied to the payment of an outstanding first mortgage, the discharge of existing dndebtedness, for the benefit of for- mer stockholders, and for working capital. William C. Lancaster of New York City is president of the com- pany. The Western Maryland Raiiway geports for nine months ended Sep- tember 30, 1936, net income of $956,- 108 after taxes and charges, equal to ©5.39 a share on 177,420 shares of 7 per cent first preferred stock on which no dividends have been paid. fhis compares with $588,745 or $3.32 @ share on 7 per cent preferred stock in first nine months of 1935. Maryland Displays Thrift. Mutual savings banks in Maryland @re now carrying a total of $2,372,119 in 52,032 accounts in Christmas Sav- ings Club funds, according to a re- port from the national association, which announces a gain of more than $6,000,000 in Christmas savings in the mutual banks in 14 States during the present year. Bond salesmen in the financial dis- trict expect another telephone issue will be placed on the market this Fall, the Ohio Associated Telephone Co. planning to put out about $1,890,000. The proceeds will be used to refund the outstanding issue of 6s, which are callable at 105. Bonbright & Co. is expected to head the underwriting syndicate. The Commerce Department reports that average daily sales of chain stores in September were 5.2 per cent higher than in September, 1935. The greatest gain was shown in fountain sales, which were up 16 per cent. Tobacco sales decreased a fraction of 1 per cent. Heard in Financial District. Farmers’ cash income in September was 16 per cent larger than in the same month last year, largely as the result of unusually large marketings of cotton and live stock, the Bureau of Agricul- ture Economics reported yesterday. Cash income in September was $754,- 000,000, the bureau estimated, com- pared with $635,000,000 in August and $648,000,000 in September, 1935. ‘The Connecticut Mutual Life Insur- ance Co. has sent out a list of “lost policyholders” in which three Wash- ington names appear, Claire C. Cant- ner, Lillian Lucy A. Marsh and John J. Rasmussen. The company - states that 250 policyholders have failed to give any change in address, insurance on the group amounting to $180,000 and dividends of more than $5,000 awaiting payment. Anacostia & Potomac Railroad 55 came out at 7515, Capital Traction 5s were strong at 93 and Capital Transit stock moved at 143, unchanged. , . 1936 125% 54 551 72 6415 137% 5474 90 6415 13% 832% 82 5 14% 2% 895 28% 45 93% 45% 130 36 63% 260 1803, 10213 150 15% 321y 4T 26% 188 50 122 110% Th 62% 15 224 22 119 514 B8Yy 107 A4 534 35 115 304 54l 104 ™ Er 5% 26 41l 493 118 34% 194 125% By Private Wire Direct to The Star. 215 p.m. Stock and Low.
