There is a serious threat to the cul- | | tural life of the Nation in the motion | picture and radio programs now avail- able for children, according to Rem- | ington Korper, field secretary of Junior Programs, Inc, who assists in pre- senting plays and operas written for the young. Korper, who terms the current | movie and radio programs “vulgar and | melodramatic,” arrived here yesterday. He plans to visit the schools during the next few days to inform students about the four shows which are to be presented in Washington in the next two months under the sponsorship of the Junior League with the co-opera- tion of the Community Center. “Our children are fast becoming conditioned to lower standards” Korper said in discussing radio come- dians and the doubtful taste of num- erous cinema dramas. “Unless drastic steps are taken, the cultural life of the Nation is seriously threatened. Boys and girls of today are the artists or the patrons of the arts of tomorrow. Their opportunities for cultural devel. | opment during formative years will | determine the future standard of our American culture.” Impressions Appalling. Appalling impressions are apparent | in children, Korper says, as a result of | entertainment intended for adults and | | promoted for commercial profit. It is | astounding, he thinks, that neither | medium has done more about chil- | | dren’s programs. Those offered are ‘ never planned by educators and psy- | | chologists who know what 1s valuable | | and at the same time amusing to the young, he holds. ! One means of developing apprecia- | | ! tion of good music and fine theater among young persons, according to Korper, is to encourage them in schools to participate personally in the creative arts. Steps in this dx-; rection are being taken by most edu- cators, and traveling players with a | | repertoire designed to interest chil- | dren are offered from Maine to Ala- bama. Of the four entertainments sched- | uled for Washington, “Haensel and | Gretel,” Humperdinck's beloved fairy tale opera, will be presented first at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, | at Roosevelt High School auditorium. | | This drama of fairies, witches and | gmgerbrend children will be presented at movie prices so every one may go. | Initiated only three years ago, jun- | ior programs are playing in 12 States | this season, and “Haensel and Gretel” ‘ | already has been sung to 180,000 youngsters. | With a youthful and dxstmgurhcd cast of Metropolitan Opera Co. caliber. the opera has been repeated in New | York three times this season. Marion | Sclee, well-known mezzo-soprano, | plays Haensel, while Cecile Sherman, | | has the Gretel role. Two Attractions. “The Land of Once Upon a Thme” | | will be presented by Blix Ruskay, mon- | ologist, on November 14, and on De- | cember 5 Washington children will be | privileged to watch the famous Jitney | Players do “Adventures in Oz.” Ethel PAY DAY RADIO SPECIAL | THE EVENING Movie and Radio Programs Seen Menace, to Children REMINGTON KORPER. Barrymore Colt has a part in this pro- duction, and in Korper's opinion she is an actress worthy of the Barrymore tradition. “Stories in Black and White” & humorous program by Robert and Ber- nice Reaser, will conclude these shows | on January 9. This is the first time junior pro- | grams have been presented in Wash- ington, but the sponsors hope they may be an annual event. Korper, although a young man, has | accumulated a great deal of experi- |ence in the theater. After studying Greek theater at Oxford University and attending the Yale School of Dra- matics, he directed June Walker in' STAR, WASHINGTON.
