Pilgrimage of High Officers Led by Assistant Sec- retary Roosevelt. Led by Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt, most of the Navy's high command deserted the Capital to- day to participate in the 90th anni- versary celebration of the founding of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. Looking back on almost a century of ave received their diplomas, officers he. have won eminence in war and peace, heads of other educational in- stitutions ahd the descendants of the | | men who made the academy possible and guided it during its early years— all were gathered together to honcr their alma mater. The regiment of 2,022 midshipmen took a promineit part in honoring their institution, which has grown from a few acres of land surround- ing Fort Severn, with 50 midship- men enrolled, to the present large reservation with $28,000,000 in mas- sive granite buildings and equipment, The program, lasting throughout the day, began with a band concert on Worden Field and will end to- night with a costume ball in the armory. Flags, guns and other relics cap- tured in the Nation's wars, boats and equipment which had played their parts in heroic achievement of the Navy were on display. Another display that drew atten- tion were the uniforms of the Navy from those first worn to the present. With these there were sketches of feminine costumes of 1845 with their billowing skirts and drop shoulders. Among the honored guests were de- scendants of three Presidents of the United States and seven Secretaries of the Navy. There were six officers who have held the rank of ‘“com- mander in chief of the United States Fleet.” They were: Admiral William H. Standly, now | chief of naval operations; Admiral | Hilary P. Jones, retired; Rear Admiral | R. H. Leigh, retired; Rear Admiral Frank H. Scofleld, retired; Rear Ad- miral Henry B, Wilson, retired, and Rear Admiral David Foote Sellers, superintendent of the Naval Academy. The formal ceremonies, held on the | steps of Mahan Hall, began after a | band concert on Worden Field. Ad- miral Sellers welcomed the returned graduates and visitors and Assistant Secretary Roosevelt spoke. Dr. Wiler Dwight Bancroft of Cornell Univer- sity, grandson of George Bancroft, who as Secretary of the Navy founded the Academy, responded. Admiral Bellers introduced the descendants of the founders of the institution. The spectators then assmbled about ‘Worden Field where they watched a sham battle between groups of mid- shipmen. Under cover of one-pounder gunfire froma subchasers on the Bevern River, a landing force from the “Fleet” stormed the trenches of a de- fending force on the fleld. Rear Admiral Purnell F. Harrington, 91, the oldest living graduate of the | academy, will speak from his home in | Yonkers, N. Y. He will be answered by George A. Roberts, Point Marion, | Pa., the youngest midshipman en- rolled at the academy. CO., INC., WARFIELD CHEVROLET SALES, ALEXANDRIA, VA, ROCKVILLE, MD, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1935, NURSES' SERVIGES PLEDGED TONEEDY Emergency Hospital Group to Give One Day or Night Yearly. An enterprising group of Emergency Hospital nurses, pledged to devote at least one day or night each year to the free care of indigent sick persons, today put their plan into action. Ninety nurses already have joined this mercy service unit, known as the Gold Cross Volunteer Service. The plan was conceived some time ago by Miss Maidie Nunn, graduate nurse at Emergency. Miss Nunn was often struck by the plight of poor people brought to the hospital need- ing private nurse service but unable to afford it. She hit upon her volun- teer plan and immediately luu-ud it to hospital officials. They re gave their approval. Miss Nunn then set about getting other nurses interested in helping needy patients. With the aid of 10 other recruiters it was only a short while before 30 nurses had signed up. The number grew daily and as the Gold Cross Volunteer Service | got under way today 90 nurses, inciuding several from outside the hospital; had agreed ‘to devote at least one day or n!(htolduh‘mflmblldwnt o Victims find ief from maddeni; ”:‘khmgmzu::m‘ b;nuu : Now is the time to install an Oil Burner—before you buy, see the Electrol on display at Griffithe Consumers, ~—Star Star Photo. 1413 New York Avenus (ONSUMERS (GMPANY MEt. 4840 711 Twelfth St. Crowded Out Models and designs in Living Room, Bed Room and Dining Room Furniture that must give place to newer creations by our Company of Mastercraftsmen.
