STRANGLER SLAYS | HIGH SCHOOL GIRL Killer Leaves Nail Mark on Neck—Police Seek Motive. By the Associated Press. ROCHESTER, N. Y. October 10— | Mystery surrounded today the slaying | of Muriel Hall, pretty 18-year-old high | school girl, who was strangled to death in the living room of her home in a fashionable residential distrigt. | With only the unmistakable mark of a fingernail on her slender neck and an unlatched door as clues, police were questioning friends and school- | mates, hoping to find some motive. | The girl was found dead by her| foster father, Leonard I. Hall, manu- facturing company executive, when he returned home from his office early last evening. Wore School Dress. She wore the same iight brown dress in which she had returned from school only two hours before. No sign of a struggle was apparent in the four-room | apartment which Hall and the girl occupied on the third floor of ‘he residence of H. Hewes Sullivan, prominent business man. Coroner David H. Atwater performed an autopsy. | “Death by strangulation at the hands of a person or persons un-| known,” was his verdict. | Police, who at first believed the girl | had committed suicide or died a natu- ral death, launched a search for the slayer. In City But Two Weeks. The girl came here only two weeks ago from Fairport, a suburb, where she had been living with her foster mother. The Halls have been sepa- Tated for several years. Mrs. Sullivan, wife of the owner of the house in which the girl lived, was not at home yesterday afternoon. She told police, however, that her invalid | mother, who occupied a room on the | second floor, heard the girl come in about 4 p.m., and a short time later heard a “thump” on the floor above. | Police said a prowler could have entered the house unseen through an unlatched side door which both fami- lies used. Interest Rates Up. Bank interest rates in China re-' cently soared to 20 cents per mill a day. Annullment Asked By Second Wife of | ‘Horseback Groom’ Mrs. Van Horn Says She “Just Happened’ to Read of Former Marriage. ‘The marital entanglements of | George M. Van Horn, the ‘“horse- | back groom.” were further compli- cated yesterday when his second wife, | the former Rose Wallace, filed a peti- tion- in District Supreme Court for annullment of their marriage. | Van Horn. 30, is being held in | Alexandria, Va., for grand jury ac- tion on a charge of bigamy placed against him October 3 by Mrs. Ethei | Mae Nagel Van Horn of Baltimore. When arrested, Van Horn pleaded not guilty, stating he believed his | first wife had obtained a divorce. ‘They were married in Ellicott City, Md., August 21, 1934, the annullment petition filed by the second Mrs. Van Horn alleges. Van Horn and the young woman who seeks to dissolve their marriage were married July 19 in Memorial Circle, on the Mount Vernon Boule- | vard. The entire wedding party was on horseback éxcept Rev. Pierce S. Ellis of the First Baptist Church, Alexandria, who performed the cere- mony. The unique ceremony was de- cided upon, Van Horn said, because both he and his bride came from Texas and had met first on a bridle path. The first Mrs. Van Horn said she learned of her husband's marriage to Miss Wallace only by chancing to read of it in a Sunday newspaper | magazine story. | Mrs. Van Horn No. 2 gave her ad- dress as 1803 Biltmore street and that of her husband, an auto mechanic, | as 7 New York avenue northeast. “Miss Universe” EGYPTIAN GIRL WINS WORLD BEAUTY TITLE. TOUSLEY, General Manager From Your Doctor if the “Pain” Remedy You Take is SAFE Don’t Entrust Your Own or Your Family’s Well-Being to Unknown Preparations. BEFORE you take any 'preparation you don’tknow all about, for the relief of head- aches; or the pains of rheuma- tism, neuritis or neuralgia, ask your doctor what he thinks about it —in comparison with Genuine Bayer Aspirin. We say this because, before the discovery of Bayer Aspirin, most so-called “pain” remedies were advised against by phy- sicians as being bad for the stomach; or, often, for the heart. And the discovery of Bayer Aspirin largely changed medical practice. Countless thousands of peo- Price of ple who have taken Bayer Aspirin year in and out without ill effect, have proved that the medical findings about its safe- ty were correct. Remember this: Genuine Bayer Aspirin is rated among the fastest methocs yet dis- covered for the relief of head- achesand all common pains... and safe for the average person to take regularly. You can get real Bayer Aspirin at any drug store— simply by never asking for it by the name "L:plfin" alone, but always saying BAYER ASPIRIN when you buy.
