SOCIETY. Officials, Diplomats In the News, Secretary and Mrs. Swanson at Naval Academy Today. The Secretary of the Navy and Mrs. Claude A. Swanson are spending today in Anuapolis where they went for the observance of the ninetieth anniver- sary of the founding of the Naval Academy. The Superintendent of the Naval Academy and Mrs. David F. Sellers were hosts at luncheca pre- ceding the foot ball game, their other guests including the Chief of Naval Operations and Mrs. William Standley. ‘The Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Daniel C. Roper, who returned from New York yesterday, will be joined tonight by Mrs. Roper. The Secre- tary and Mrs. Roper were in Atlantic City over the week end and went to New York Tuesday. Senora de Alfaro, wife of the Min- ister of Panama, was hostess at luncheon today in honor of Senora de Gurdian, wife of the minister of for- eign affairs of Costa Rica. The guegts were Seuora de Castillo Najera, Mme. Senora de Arcaya, Senora de Borden- ave, Senora de Alfaro. wife of the Minister of Ecuador; Senora de Castro, Senora de Brache, Senora de Gonzalez, Senora de Caceres, Senora ‘Vengoechea, niece of Senora de Gur- dian, and Mrs. James Moran. The newly appointed Minister of Yugoslavia, Mr. Constantin Fotitch, and Mme. Fotitch, will arrive in this country within a fortnight and will come directly from New York to me} Capital. ‘The governor of the Federal Reserve Board, Mr. Marriner S. Eccles, will Join Mrs. Eccles today at the Shore- ham, where they have taken an apart- ment for the Fall and Winter. Mrs. Eccles arrived yesterday from their home, at Ogden, Utah, where the family spent the Summer. She ‘was accompanied by Mrs. Robert An- derson of Los Angeles, who joined her at Ogden, and will be her guest at the hotel for several weeks. Miss Eleanor Eccles, who attends Holton Arms School, and Mr. John David Eccles and Mr. Campbell Eccles, daughter and sons of Mr. and Mrs. | Eccles, came two weeks ago and are with their mother at the hotel. Before a year's service in the state department in Buenos Aires he was on duty in the | Argentine Legation in Copenhagen, his country’s headquarters for Den- mark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, which is covered by the one office. Dr. Diaz-Leguizamon is a bachelor. The chief of protocol and Mrs. Richard Southgate have had as their guest_the latter's sister, Signora Col- letti-Perucca, who is spending several days in New York and will return here for another visit. Signor Colletti-Perucca and his two elder sons sailed last week to return to Italy, where his sons will resume their studies. The youngest son re- mained in this country with his mother. Mrs. McAndrew widow of Maj. Gen. James W. McAndrew, after spending the Summer at Bar Harbor, Me., will return to her apartment in 2400 Sixteenth street at the end of the month. Col. and Mrs. E. H., is director for her State of the Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation, Inc., under whose auspices the dedication of Stratford Hall will take place Saturday, October 12. Stratford, in Westmoreland County, Va., is the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, and it will be dedicated by the founda- tion as a national shrine to his mem- ory and to that of his patriot kinsmen, the Lees of Stratford. Mrs. Brown is chairman of the Dedication Program Committee. With the aid of the members.of her com- mittee she has devoted herself for months to the work of arranging for ihis memorable occasion. Mrs. Brown, the former Caroline Lewis Goraon. is the daughter of the celebrated John B. Gordon of Geor- gia, lieutenant-general of the Con- federate Army, who, although many years youpger, was an intimate friend of Gen. Lee and, in later years, of Gen. Grant. He was twice Governor of Georgia and three times United States Senator. Mrs. Brown was born at Sutherland, the family estate near Atlanta, Ga. There was a brief period, before her marriage, when she sang Negro folk songs in public, of which she had a rare and valuable collection, gathered at first hand from the Negroes on her father’s plantation in the Southern part of Georgia. She also read orig- inal sketches of plantation life among these same Negroes, who had lived for generations on the plantation.
