Brings Events From 25 Different Countries in Year. PANNING two oceans 144 times from September, 1934, to Sep- tember, 1935, Columbia brought programs to America from 25 different foreign countries in every | part of the world. Of these broad- casts, transmitted under every con- celvable condition, only five were Judged upsatistactory. Broadcasts from England rated highest in general average among V'V VVVVVVVVVN COMBINATION SALE {1 LB. BRIGG'S SAUSAGE MEAT AND 1 PKG. VA, SWEET PANCAKE FLOUR for 390 these programs which were trans- mitted by short wave and rebroadcast on the average of one every two and one-half days. Of the 72 broadcasts from the British Isles most of them compared favorably with local trans- missions. King George, Kipling, the Wimbledon tennis matches and a group of other special events and news commentaries arrived with un- usual clarity. Reception of Bernard Shaw was one of few to prove frac- tious, while Big Ben admittedly wasn't as clear as a bell. Manila is many thousands of miles further removed from New York than Paris, but in the ears of the men in the Columbia master control room it doesn’t mean a thing. Down in their log book at the end of each broadcast “TO ARMS FOR PEACE” HON. ALFRED E. True, they make some allowance for the fact that it's coming on short wave from a foreign transmitter. How- ever, with no hostages offered to mileage, each lends a practical ear to the receiver and if nine words out of ten are understandable with no straining, it's an excellent program and marked up as such. ok ok ok N.
