DAILY SHORT STORY- BLIND FAITH Ciau Determined to Have New Linoleum, and Got It, at the Price of Gordon's Peace of Mind. BY RANDLYN CAYLOR. coffee. Her hand shook slightly; she bit her lip as though she were trying to decide between two thoughts.” “This old, er, thing is so worn,” she ventured finally, avoiding Gor- don's eyes, “I'm ashamed of it.” “Huh!” Gordon grunted, “that’s it!” He pushed aside his breakfast. “Look,” Gordon pointed out with a spoon, “look at here. You'd better scrap that keepin’-up-with-the- Joneses idea. It's stale. We've fig- ured out our budget for the next three months, and we'll manage ac- Clara swallowed. Gordon sighed. “Course,” he softened, “if we knew what was ahead I'd say all right. But we don't.” “What if everybody thought as you do?” Clara flared up. It shocked Gordon a trifle, although he absorbed it. “We'd be everlastingly saving, scraping, putting money into the bank and never using any of it. I don't see why we should stint ourselves Gardon pressed his lips together and bounced up. Clara flinched. He walked around to her. “Listen, darling,” he put his arms around her. His tone was soft and oily. “I'm only thinking of you—of us. If we take it with our chin up now we'll be in a choice position to head off the Joneses later on. That's the way to look at it.” He kissed his wife perfunctorily and was off. If he had lingered a moment more a tear would have collided with his nose. On the train Gordon met Bill Gaines. Bill and Gerdon had much in common. They were business men, and the first command in their decalogue was: “Let’s see the fig- ures.” “It amazes me” began Gordon when the two had settled down to their seat in the smoker, “the short- range view women take of the finan- cial situation.” “You're teliing me,” Bill paused in the act of lighting a left-over pipeful. “My wife has 'em all skinned with that Alice in Wonderland attitude.” He chuckled. “If I'd let my wife go,” Gordon complained, “she’d use our savings on unnecessary house furnishings. For the last week she’s been ragging me for a new linoleum. All that's the matter with t.hg old one is a few worn patterns. “Don't let her start that stuff,” Bill pulled a newspaper out of his pocket. “If you do therell be no end to it. When you get the linoleum that will show up the curtains; when you “WE'VE FIGURED OUT OUR BUDGET.” get the curtains they’ll show up the shades, and so on . and so forth. Heh! heh! They think they're slick.” “What makes women like that, women for you.” Gordon had had & hard day at the office. He was ravenous, too, for he'd worked two hours overtime. Because he'd put the usual amount in the bank last week (a good bank, of course) no loose change was available for supper money. So Gordon skipped it, and now, on coming home, he was ready for anything. However, the apartment was dark, locked. Gordon called for his wife. No answer. As he rushed from room to room. frantically searching for the body or a note, he began to see why Clara hadn't phoned that she wouldn't be home. The breakfast dishes were in the nook, untouched. The house wasn't swept. The mending basket was full of socks, holes still gaping in toe and heel. A dreaded thought worked into Gordon’s mind, as his sturdy frame sagged into a chair. She had left him—driven away because he had valued his cautious savings more than aer happiness. She wouldnt come ck— Suddenly the door clicked. Clara rushed in—into Gordon's arms. “I'm sorry, dear,” she smiled. *“I just couldn’t get in touch with you.” “Why not?” Clara tried to remove her coat. “Wait until I get dinner started,” she evaded. Gordon's appetite had vanished. “Tell me what's happened,” he in- sisted. “Well” Clara said slowly, “I did want that linoleum awfully. So—I— — “. . . bought one!” “Not yet,” Clara corrected. “But I will. I got a job doing housework this morning. I wanted to get home early so's not to let you know— Please don't be angry,” she coddled him. “It’ll only be for a couple of = ” “Never mind,” Gordon waved. “put “But, Gordon. We can't—the bude get. I—why, what's got into you?” “Well, you see, it's this way,” plained Gordon. “Before you returned I vowed to myself I'd get you any- thing your heart desired, if you'd just come back. Right now I know you'd appreciate a treat to dinner. And to whet your appetite, here’s my O. K. for & new lincleum rug. Here's an- other O. ROMAN EMPIRE GRANARY | TO YIELD WHEAT AGAIN Syrian Plain Will Be Irrigated and Power Plant Also Will Be Constructed. BEIRUT, Syria (#).—Golden wheat will soon again cover the great Hau- ran Plain, former granary of the Roman Empire. A vast plan to utilise water power in Northern Hauran to irrigate the land and work a much-needed elec- tric power plant has been approved by the French high commissioner, Comte de Martel. A site has been chosen at Tell- Chehab where a series of waterfalls are available. The cost will be ap- 'to | proximately $700,000. Other irrigation projects also are under consideration for the regions near Homs and Hama through which the Orontes, of biblical fame, flows, and the El-Bilane district using the Al-Ao\uae River, — Cotton Growing Spurred.
