A—Ig ¥s» GOCKELER CHEERED) BY 1935 OUTLOOK Head of Capital Exchange Foresees Contmuatlop of Year’s Gains. BY EDWARD C. STONE. C. J. Gockeler, president of the Wi n Stock Exchange, pre- dicted today that 1935 will be a ban- ner year on the exchange; that the strength main- tained during 1934 will be con- tinued, and that the recent nota- ble price stability ought to be an outstanding fea- ture again next year. He is also optimistic on the banking and busi- ness outlook here. “The end of 1934 shows a vast im provement in conditions in Washington,”Mr, & * Gockeler, Gockeler said, “which, I am confident, will be continued during the coming year. The stability of our local issues, their reports of increased earnings and dividends will make local stocks and bonds more attractive to the careful investor. “Renewal of confidence expressed in the street for the New Deal will tend, I believe, to promote the general activity of our Washington Exchange. - The increased business reported by local merchants naturally means in- creased profits, and no doubt a part of this larger income will be invested in the strong securities listed on the exchange. “The culmination of the street rail- way merger during the past pear and the declaration of a dividend by the new Capital Transit Co. should be noted by investors in Washington,” the exchange president added, “as well as the upward trend in the com- pany’s earnings. Registry Aids Exchange. “The Washington Stock Exchange was one of the first exchanges in the whole United States to be registered for trading by the new Securities and Exchange Commission, The require- ments exacted by the commission of their member exchanges will tend to safeguard investors to the highest degree. “The record of prime issues oa the ‘Washington Exchange during the past year has been particularly good. Prices have been well supported and there have been many advances. It is also worthy of note that prices on good securities here did not drop nearly as far as a great many issues on the New York Exchange did at the time of the break or afterward. Exchange officials are justified in fecl- ing proud of the way that the best stocks and bonds on the board have acted during the past year. That record augers well for the future.” Mr. Gockeler has been president of the Exchange for the past two years, ‘was secretary several years and is an official in the Hamilton National Bank. Christmas Clubs Are Booming. Christmas savings clubs in the Washington banks were reported to- day as starting more new member- ships than they had at the same time last year and a survey revealed that the amounts being subscribed are also larger. While the time for join- ing the 1935 clubs runs into January, it is already evident that last year’s records both for members and amounts will be exceeded. The increase in population in the Capital during the past year is one reason given for the growing inierest. General improvement in business con- ditions is another. A third reason voiced by new subscribers is that they expect to see restoration of the Gov- ernment pay cut in the near future. The prospect of an increase in ircome has motivated many to turn to the popular Christmas savings clubs. ‘When the 1935 totals are availaole there are likely to be some real sur- prises on the way the clubs have swung back toward the former thrift peaks. Fleming on Recovery Bdard. Robert V. Fleming, president of the Riggs National Bank and first vi preisdent of the American Bankers’ Association, has been made a mem- ber of the Business Recovery Board just chosen by the business leaders in session at White Sulphur Springs. Thomas W. Brahany, manager of the Washington office of E. A. Pierce & Co,, is in Florida on a short vaca- tion. Securities and Exchange Commis- sion has granted the application of Peoples Drug Stores, Inc., for regis- tration on the New York Stock Ex- change of 122,737 shares of unissued common stock. The stock is to be is- sued as a 100 per cent stock dividend and will be quoted ex dividend Mon- dxy December 31, the Exchange has !n "the first 11 months of this year the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad FINANCIAL. Prices Stiffen After Early « Irregularity. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 21.—Dull- ness ruled in the stock market today and the majority of leading issues showed narrow changes. Prices stiff- ened in the late trading following some earlier irregularity led by further sell- ing in the utilities. Sears, Roebuck and American Telephone showed losses of around a point each. National Dis- tillers and Standard Oil of New Jersey were firm spots, while Consolidated Gas, U. 8. Steel, Montgomery Ward and N. Y. Central held about even. Transfers approximated 850,000 shares. Shares of Consolidated Gas and North American managed to recover small fractions, but Public Service of New Jersey dipped a point or so be- fore meeting support and American Telephone lost as much. Standard Oil of New Jersey came to life with an ad- vance of a point and a firm tone was displayed by Eastman Kodak, Stand- ard Oil of California, American Can, National Distillers and a number of others. Among stocks off a point or more were Interboro Rapid Transit, Brook- lyn-Manhattan Transit, Monsanto Chemical and Sears Roebuck. Issues about unchanged to a trifle lower were United States Steel, Bethelehem, General Electric, General Motors, Chrysler, Montgomery Ward and Schenley. The rails were listless, despite an unusually good freight car loadings report for the week ended Decem- ber 15. The tendency of various stocks to draw away from the adverse influ- ence of the utilities was encouraging to those technicians who still believe that the course of prices, especially in the industrial groups, is upward. Administrative opposition to the proposal of business and industrial leaders that the Government swing away from work relief to direct aid to the needy was generally viewed in Wall Street as “unfortunate” in that the co-operative move between finance and Washington might be retarded. Hopes were expressed, however, that the controversy would not reach the stage where it would seriously inter- fere with the progress of recovery. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 21.—Larger buying in the corn futures market than has recently been witnessed led to late advances of corn prices today and helped to rally wheat. Demand for corn futures was due more or less to the fact that prices had broken about 8 cents a bushel from the recent high point. There was some talk that in view of lack of subsoil moisture in the Spring wheat area the aggregate crop of all wheat for 1935 might turn out below normal domestic requirements.
