PAUL G. CHANDLER ELECTED FIRE CHIEF Greater Capitol Heights Depart- ment Gives Lieutenancy to Stanbrough. Special Dispatch to The Star. GREATER CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md., December 21.—Paul G. Chandler has been unanimously elected chief of the Greater Capitol Meights Volun- teer Fire Department to succeed Wil- liam T. Miles, who declined to run. R. M. Stanbrough defeated O. E. Simonsen, 12 to 9, for the lieutenancy in the only contest. Other officers elected unanimously SO0 I were William J. Tierney, deputy chief; H. M. McCully, captain; Z. J. Ptacek, fire marshal; E. R. Haller, superin- tendent of machinery; F. L. Schwalen- berg, sergeant; C. E. Compagna, guard; Elza Job, secretary; L. Manarin, treas- urer, and Carl E. Price, financial secre- tary. The Christmas party for the chil- dren of the community will be given Friday night in the fire house. The party is jointly sponsored by the firemen and its ladies’ auxiliary. Fruits, candy and toys will be given the children. - A moving picture will be part of the entertainment program. A benefit dance will be given by the firemen Saturday night in the fire house. HELSINGFORS (#).—Drunkenness has increased in Finland since the re- peal of prohibition, although illegal trade in liquor has been curtailed sharply, reports the temperance and alcohol division of the social ministry. A total of 103,112 cases of drunken- ness was reported in 1933, the highest figure since the World War, the min- istry says.
