BONDS DISPLAY INPROVED TREND Surface Movements Remain | Mixed—Some Utility Issues Recover. BY BERNARD S. O'HARA, Assoclated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, December 21.—The listed borfd market displayed a steadier undertone today but on the surface movements continued mixed. Trad- ing slowed down appreciably as the market found a better footing. Most Treasury issues yielded for ad- ditional small losses. Local traction issues encountered liquidation and rails génerally were mixed in face of a good contraseasonal gain in car- loa Fractional losses were recorded in Bethlehem Steel 5s, Erie 5s, Interna- tional Telephone 5s and Western Union 5s. NEW YORK, December 21.—With holiday buying exceeding all previous expectations, retail trade rose to new peaks during the last week, said the weekly Dun & Bradstreet review to- day. “Th some of the large centers,” as- serted the summary, “where early es- timates had been tinged with no small degree of doubtfulness as to the ex- tent of the demand, the preliminary estimates of sales for the entire Christmas season were more than sur- passed before the final week had be:n reached. “With the surge of last-minute buy- ing yet to be recorded, retail sales for December are placed conservatively at 20 to 30 per cent in excess of those a year ago. “To most retailers the Christmas season has brought the largest sales since 1930, with many reporting the 1929 figures exceeded. “Comforted by. the assurance that 1934 will close with trade positions from both the volume and profit standpoint the strongest achieved in five years, plans for a broader expan- sion in 1935 are now being fo:mu- lated. “In industrial operations the con- traseasonal uptrend is becoming more forceful, with gains for the week par- ticularly emphatic in those divisions identified with the production of steel. building materials, plumbing supplies, automobiles, farm equipment, textiles and shoes.
