CHESTNEAR GOAL LATEAUDIT SHONS Final Tally Reveals 96.72 Per Cent Raised, or $1,620,496. The 193¢ Community Chest Cam- paign Committee has closed its books on the most successful campaign since 1929, with a total in hand of $1,620,~ 496.34, or 96.72 per cent of its quota of $1,675,000, according to a final audit announced last night. Belated returns since the official close of the campaign November 21 have reduced the “deficit” of the 1934 campaign from $104,800 to only $54,- 503.66, the final audit shows. The final figures reveal that Wash- ington this year has staged one of the Nation's most successful Com- munity Chest campaigns, coming within a little more than 3 per cent of its total quota, while many other cities fell far short of their goals. * Exceeds Last Year's Quota. The amount actually raised this year not only was the nearest ap- proach to the total quota in five years, but it also exceeded by nearly $100,- 000 the amount raised last year, when only 77.6 per cent of the quota was obtained. The official close of the 1934 cam- paign found the campaign ‘workers with a total of $1,570,199.63 in hand in cash and pledges, according to audited figures reported by the Audit Unit, headed by James A. Councilor. The new total reported last night represents reports turned in too late for inclusion in the final report of the campaign and contributions re- ceived since the official close of the drive from persons absent from the city at the time or who made late con- tributions. There was no campaigning on the part of more than 6,000 volun- teer Chest workers after the official close of the drive & month ago. Several Records Established. The 1934 campaign established sev- eral Community Chest records. There were approximately 148,000 contributors to the 193¢ Community Chest. The 1930 census shows 125,55¢ families in the District. Government employes in Washing- ton, exclusive of enlisted men of the Army and Navy, contributed almost 100 per cent to the campaign. More than 93,000 individual contributions were received by the Government Unit, headed by Maj. Gen. Frederick W. Coleman, chief of finance of the Army, which exceeded by about 7 per cent its quota of $570,500. By the Associated Press, ‘WINNIPEG, December 21.—Charges by John I. McFarland, general mana- ger of the Canadian Wheat Polls, that grain elevator interests were being played against those of the Canadian farmer and wheat trader, fell upon a surprised grain trade yesterday, but 24 hours after their utterance little reaction was forthcoming. The manager of the Canadian gov- ernment’s wheat operations suggested substitution of the December contract in the futures trading system by a November contract.
