Gen- eral Motors, United States Steel, Montgomery Ward, International Har- vester, General Electric and other pivotal issues deflected the better tone of the market, most of them finish- ing a shade higher. Du Pont slipped a fraction in face of the testimony coming out of the munitions inquiry at Washington. Tape watchers detected a better tone to the share list. On the surface, however, average final prices showed little change. Typical week end peace prevailed in most markets. Turnover in the Stock Exchange totaled 464,060 shares com- pared with 458,740 last Saturday, but much of it was in a handful of issues, notably Radio common. ‘With traders marking time awaiting political and business developments, the bond market merely held its ground and leading commodities fluc- tuated uncertainly within narrow limits. Some fair-sized selling orders in Radio, coincident with persistent buy- ing of senior shares, lent color to rumors plans for meeting dividend arrears involved inssuance of more common.
