SOCIETY. ‘Three Plays Given By Essayons Club At Fort Humpl‘u’cys Llrge Audience Attends Ini- tial Presentation at Engi- neer Theater. FORT HUMPHREYS, Va., Decem- ber 15—Three one-act plays pre- sented to a large audience of Wash- ington and Fort Humphreys resi- dents Friday evening at the Engineer Theater marked the initial bow of the Essayons Dramatic Club this season. “God Save the King” was directed by Lieut. Col. John R. D. Matheson, and was capably played by Ruby Hale Cunningham, John R. D. Matheson and Robert F. Gill. “Demitasse,” di- rected by Mrs. Philip Kromer, jr., had the following cast, Jane Pohl, Helen gemc. Virginia Ott and Chester W. tt. The Philip Johnson comedy, “Send Her Victorious,” was directed by Miss Alice Spalding and had in its cast Fanny Brown, Martha Johnson, Wil- liam F. Cassidy, Louis R. Wirak and Ferdinand J. Tate. The stage man- ager, Chaplain John R. Wright, de- signed the scenery, assisted by Maj. Henry A. Windgate, Capt. Heath Twitchell and Lieut. Staunton L. Brown. Properties managers were Mrs. Robert H. Elliott and Lieut. Brown, and music was furnished by | * the 13th Engineers’ Orchestra. The performances were artistically exe- cuted and were received with enthusi- astic applause. Lieut. Col. Matheson, the dramatics representative, has an- nounced that the other performances of the season will be full length plays, the next presentation to be given in February. Dance Given Officers. Following the plays at the theater Friday evening a dance was given for the officers and ladies of the post and their Washington guests at the Offi- cers’ Club. Lieut. and Mrs. Charles Keller, jr., left Saturday, December 8, prior to their sailing yesterday for Panama, where the lieutenant has been as- signed to duty. A large group of riders assembled in the park of the officers’ area Sunday morning for the start of a paper chase. Directed by Maj. Harry A. Buckley, M. H, and Capt. Homer B. Pettit, assistant M. H, the paper trail was laid just prior to the chase and was broken in places, necessi- tating a search for the new trail. Maj. Stanley L. Scott won the men’s * chase, and of the ladies, Miss Hall of Washington was first in. A group of spectators gathered to witness the finish, and breakfast was served at Mackenzie Hall. Capt. and Mrs. Heath Twichell re- cently had as their guest Mrs. Swen- bold, wife of Capt. Helmar Swenbold of Fort Dupont. Lieut. and Mrs. Warren N. Under- wood recently entertained Lieut. Un- derwood’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W, E. Underwood of Sparrows Point, Md. Capt. and Mrs. Homer B. Pettit en- tertained the Monday Night Bridge Club this week. Maj. and Mrs. Noce Hosts. Maj.-and Mrs. Daniel Noce enter- tained at dinner before the plays Fri- day evening. Their guests were Lieut. Col. and Mrs. John R. D. Matheson, Capt. and Mrs. Kenneth M. Moore, Lieut. and Mrs. Arleigh T. Bell, Lieut. and Mrs. George T. Derby, and Lieut. and Mrs. Thomas A. Adcock. Sixty children were guests at a party given by Chaplaifi-John R. ‘Wright recently at St. Martin's Cha- pel, celebrating the outcome of a Sun- day school membership and attend- ance contest. Following a program of entertainment the children were served ice cream and cake. An addition of more than 100 new books has been made to the post library threugh the efforts of Mrs. Charles H. Cunningham, assisted by Mrs. James C. Marshall and others. Included among the new books are recent publications of fiction and biography, and a carefully selected group of volumes for juvenile readers. Two Couples Entertained. Capt. and Mrs. Brom R. Whitthorne entertained Lieut. and Mrs. Thomas A. Adcock and Lieut. and Mrs. Hu- bert Miller at dinner. Lieut. and Mrs. Miller, who were residents of Fort Humphreys four years ago, have been visiting Lieut. and Mrs. Adcock while on leave en route to Panama, where Lieut. Miller soon will assume duty. Among the guests who attended Mrs. Roosevelt's masquerade party at the White House Saturday night was Mrs. Landaker, wife of Lieut. Chester Lavaughn Landaker of the Corps of Engineers. Lieut. and Mrs. Harold T. Miller, who recently arrived from Hawaii, have taken up residence temporarily at Mackenzie Hall while awaiting the completion of their new quarters. At Honolulu they sailed for the Orient, circling the globe before returning to the States. Lieut. Miller is now with the 13th Engineers.
