By the Associated Press. teet long and 56 inches In diameter. LONDON, Ontario, December 15.— |1t weighs between 400 and 500 pounds. A giant petrified tree found near what | The tree, fossilized by infusion of Is now Kettle Point, on Lake Huron, |silica over millions of years, shows & led Ontario geologists today to revise |shape somewhat flattened by the tre- their picture of the Devonian Sea, | mendous pressure to which it had been that long-vanished body of water once stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to Ontario. The geologists knew the Devonian Bea, which spread east and west, so that the Laurentian Mountains and the Rockies formed the major part of North America’s dry land, was bor- dered by dense tropical vegetation. The huge petrified tree, believed to be 200,000,000 to 300,000,000 years old, indicated to them that those jungles also contained trees, some- thing they had not known before. Discovery of the tree was made last Summer by Prof. J. W. Russell, head of Western Ontario University’s de- partment of geology. It was identi- fied subsequently as a species of cal- lixylon, the first known ancestor of | present-day pines and palms. | The largest section .of the tree| found so far is between 2 and 3 subjected. Viewed casually, it boulder, but close inspection shows a large central pith, surrounded by fossilized wood, in which the grain is still visible. Prof. Russell, assisted by W. J. Patterson, geology student, obtained several sections of the tree and sent them away to world-famed paleobotan- ists for identification. The sections provided sufficient material for scien- tists to reconstruct the tree, describe it and learn something of the land in which it grew. The callixylon grew in a western Ontario that was fantastic in com- parison with the present-day country- side. It reached a height of about 100 feet, had a round, jointed trunk and no branches. Fernlike leaves grew in a cluster at the top. It looked something like a palm. appears to be Here's How to a Merry Christmas! $29.95 A grand gift and a piece that should bein every home!
