v Capital’s Social High Lights Part 3—16 Pages Young Women Who Lend Charm and Interest to the Yrmy Set in the Capital White House he Sundwy She WASHINGTON, D. C, SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 16, 1934, Miss Janet Elizabeth | . Murray, attractive | daughter of Col. Peter Murray, U. S. A., retired, seasons ago. a debutante of several ; Is Abustle And Radiates Happiness In Yule Anticipation First Lady, Through Masterful Planning, Is Re- membering Family, Friends and Needy, Not to Mention Arrangements for Holiday Parties. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. The tardy person who wraps and consigns packages to old Kriss Krin- gle as the clock strikes 12 the Night Before Christmas, or carefully selects the New Year's cards for those whom they forget to remember with Christ- mas cards, would blush with humilia- tion over the preparedness of folks at the White House. “Plenty of time and plenty of money” you say? Perhaps not so much time as good planning. For months the White House Christ- mas closet has been accumulating boxes, bundles, small packages, some for members of the President’s house- hold but a far greater number to go to groups of children, dear old ladies and gentlemen and wherever most needed. Just timeliness and good planning. The Christmas wish or the Christmas gift which was merely a mental reservation may cause some one to feel neglected, and Mrs. Roose- velt realizes this. A big family party is assembling at the White House, and Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. Dall have been “put to” to settle them in comfortable quarters. Four generations take up a lot of room, and the chief member of the Presi- dent’s family party will be Mrs. Roose- velt, his mother. Mrs. Anna Roosevelt Dall and her two children, Eleanor Roosevelt Dall and Curtis Roosevelt Dall live in the famous old house and are busy making preparations for the other, and chortling over the fact that there will be a lot of small playmates in the house for more than a week. Mr. and Mrs. James Roosevelt of Boston and New York and their small daughter, Sarah Delano Roosevelt, will be there as will Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt and their baby daughter, Ruth. And from Harvard will come Mr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, jr., and Mr. John Roosevelt and Mrs. J. Roosevelt Roosevelt, half sister-in-law of the President, also will be in the ‘White House. This Christmas in the White House will be celebrated very much as was that of last year with several Christ- mas trees, stocking hanging and the other formalities of the season. There will be at least three party-parties with open hospitality all along the way. The first party will be a dinner followed by dancing Saturday evening, December 29, when the President and Mrs. Roosevelt will entertain for Miss Barbara Cushing, daughter of Dr. and Mrs, Harvey W. Cushing of Boston, and sister of Mrs. James Roosevelt, 3d, and Miss Jean Martineau, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Martineau of England, who are spending the Winter in the United States. Miss Martineau is the niece of the United States Minister to Canada, Mr. War- ren Delano Robbins, and both Mr. Robbins and Mrs. Martineau are first cousins of the President. The dinner eompany will be small and composed of the friends of the two younger sons of the President and Mrs. Roosevelt. New Year eve the President and Mrs. Roosevelt give another dinner party followed by dancing for their sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Roosevelt, 2d, and Mr. snd Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt, when the ests will be their personal friends. g:u the very prettiest and happiest party of all will be the Christmas party Friday afternoon, December 28, when Eleanor Roosevelt Dall and Curtis Roosevelt Dall, grandchildren of the President and Mrs. Roosevelt, will be hosts to a group of young @hildren. The vivacious and lovable 4 daughter of the White House will superintend the event. ‘The average woman might feel some trepidation over the program just scheduled, just how all the events could be tucked into the 24 hours of a day and night, but not so Mrs. Roose- velt. With all of this planning, Christmas shopping and attending various meetings and so on and so on, she yet found time to write & mes- sage to the farm women of Mont- gomery County which was read at the meeting of the Home Demonstra- tion Council of that county at Gaith- ersburg, Md., Thursday. Many of the delicious things one enjoys when dining at the White House comes (Continued on Page 5, Column 3.) Mon. Sisithisndd Wse Csicel Will Give Tea December 23 Mrs. Ell Bamford Smith and her niece, Mrs. James R. Conard will en- tertain at tea Sunday afternoon, De- cember 23, and not this afternoon as erroneously announced in yesterday's Star. The party will be given in the apartment of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in Hammon Court at 1517 Thirtieth street and is planned in honor of two of this season’s debutantes, Miss Mary Katherine Bentley, daughter of Col. and Mrs. James Brice Bentley, and Miss Charlotte Ashby Brown, whose mother, Mrs. Henry Ashby Brown is a cousin of Mrs. Conard. C., was an- nounced. Miss Preston is the daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Randolph Preston of Charlotte, N. C. and Washington. Mr. Shaffner is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Shaffner of Winston-Salem. The wedding will take place in February in Washing- ton. Miss Preston is a granddaughter of William E. Christian, a well known North Carolina and Washington newspaper man, and of the late Rev. | John _ Preston, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte for many years, and a great-granddaugh- ter of Gen. and Mrs. Stonewall Jack- son.
